Discussion: Sanders Sets Up For Convention Battle: ‘I’m The Stronger Candidate’ Against Trump

Okay, long term Bernie supporters…what say you? All I’ve heard is that he’ll support the nominee, he’s a better man than that. I guess not. If he were the stronger candidate, he would be the nominee by winning primaries.

The delusion is strong and now I’ve had enough.

“It is absolutely imperative that we defeat Donald Trump as a candidate for President of the United States. I believe I’m the stronger candidate,” Sanders told reporters in San Francisco on Monday.

  1. That’s a reasonable argument to make. I don’t agree with it, and neither will the superdelegates, but there’s nothing wrong with trying to make the case. It’s much better than banging on the corrupt Hillary drum.

  2. He’s making it awfully tough to set up a write-in campaign, or even refrain from endorsing Hillary after the convention.

  3. The fact that he’s talking like this is in itself testimony to the effectiveness of Clinton’s attack on Trump last week (and to the full horror of Trump’s own performance).

He believes he is the stronger candidate – but the problem is that the majority of democratic voters don’t believe it. This press conference does not seem like a show of strength. It seems desperate. He knows Hillary changed the dynamic by coming out last week as the presumptive nominee and attacking Trump so effectively. She showed voters that she is well qualified and can easily disassemble Trump. Bernie hasn’t really talked much about Trump yet – so now he has to do a “me too.” This press conference was nothing but free advertisement. No new information.

I have no doubt that he’s the stronger candidate (except that he gets fewer votes and pledged delegates and wins fewer states–except for all of that, he’s a much stronger candidate.)

He’s tried and failed to make his case. He lost.

I believe I’m the stronger candidate

If wishes and buts were candy and nuts… (but that doesn’t fit on a podium)

Right, like Trump was the best Republican candidate because the rest of the country hadn’t started in on him yet. What fun surprises would be waiting for our bro Bernie? ALL of HIllary’s dirty laundry has been flapping in America’s yard for decades. We know what we are getting. Bernie, my boy, you haven’t faced the right wing oppo research teams yet and they are just hoping we pick you so they can unload crap on you and the Dems. No and no and no.

Let’s hope! But Bernie’s been on his summer of love tour for the young, idealistic voters (just FYI I was one of those in 2000 voting for Nader). But I’m definitely motivated to get my absentee ballot down to my election office. I’m guessing a lot of other older D’s feel the same way. Fingers crossed!

Are you only saying this because you think when people beat their delegate signs to signify voting you’ll have a better chance than say an actual VOTE? We know you do better in the caucuses and suck in the primaries…however, if you think it’s ‘cool’ to disrupt the convention you’re out of your mind.

Sanders would lose Florida…for starters…

“[Trump] is essentially running his campaign on bigotry, on insulting Mexicans and Latinos, on insulting Muslims, on insulting African-Americans, on insulting women.”

Pretty much their official party platform since G-d was an intern.

And here I thought his press conference today would be him announcing that he was going to quit the race. Silly me. Well, Hillary will clinch tomorrow, so good riddance to this douchebag I once admired.

To his credit, he didn’t use the occasion to trash Clinton. Sigh of relief over here. We don’t need infighting to distract from Trump’s tailspin.

Of course he should make his case before the last big round of primaries. And he and his supporters are welcome to consider him the stronger candidate against Trump. (Although that blip of polling in May seems to be exactly that – a blip. I wonder what polling will look like after Trump’s terrible week of racism and Trump U exposure.) I’d certainly vote for Sanders if he was the nominee. But by Wednesday morning, it should be pretty clear than he came up short. And everything he said made it sound like he will pivot to focusing on defeating Trump. I just hope he means by supporting the Democratic nominee and not as a third-party or indie.

Hold on just to the end of tomorrow, allie. You can do it!

So he doesn’t believe the person with the most votes should win?? What.in.the.acutal.fuck?
I thought BS and his supporters were all about democracy. I guess not.

To Clinton’s credit, she never trotted out Sanders’ old writings – no reason to put that gun on the table unless you plan to use it. And when it started looking mathematically impossible for Sanders to overtake her, there was no reason. But Sanders and his supporters should acknowledge that his old writings would surface over and over again – and some of that stuff about child sexuality isn’t gonna play well (read: at all).

“I believe I’m the stronger candidate,”

I see your belief and raise you 3M+ voters who disagree.

I honestly think it’s time for the press to unload a shit ton of opposition research material everyone has on Bernie. It would shock most of his supporters to see his support crumble in the face of his rather unsavory past statements, beliefs, and associations. Oh, and WHERE ARE THE TAX RETURNS!?
