âWhat I will tell you is I was very proud to have been invited by the Vatican to an important conference dealing with morality in economics,â Sanders said. "And the fact that I was invited there was very â for me, a very moving experience."
Iâve heard it both ways â that the Vatican reached out to Sanders with an invitation, and that Sandersâ people contacted the Vatican and suggested an invitation be extended to Senator Sanders. Which is it?
âWhat I will tell you is I was very proud to have been invited by the Vatican to an important conference dealing with morality in economics,â Sanders said. âAnd the fact that I was invited there was very â for me, a very moving experience.â
Well, good for him. It was an honor to speak at the conference.
But I´m going to go out on a limb here and suggest some will seek to diminish significance of the trip.
@beattycat He was invited. > ¨¨We invited the candidate who cites the Pope the most in the campaign, and that is Senator Bernie Sanders,¨ said Bishop Marcelo Sà nchez Sorondo, the academy´s chancelor.¨
So, then, the Vatican reached out to Sanders first? Thank you.
As I understand it. Mary Archer apparently suggested that the Sander´s camp reached out for the invitation, but that was denied by her superior, who said that he had invited Sanders.
Here´s a link. Sorry, it´s to a right wing Catho site, but it has the relevant quotes.
@jimtoday since you were expressing some confusion about the issue.
So a person complaining about income inequality flies his entire family on a chartered jet to Rome to give a 10 minute presentation at an academic conference.
Did I get that right?
BBC Headline: Pope Francis: Sanders meeting 'not political meddlingâ
AP Headline, same event: Pope: Sanders encounter sign of good manners, 'nothing moreâ
Obviously, for some strange reason, you chose the spin version, lb.
Because he stalked the Pope at 4am to make sure he got face time? Sure. That seems pretty likely.
Just like he fled SC a couple days before the primary when he saw that ass-whippin coming, looks like that was his game plan for NY too. But of course, as he said this morning, he doesnât need NYC, nor a wide win in Ca to get the nomination. The manâs delusional.
Thank you for the link, @carlosfiance. Unfortunately for both sides (the Vatican and the Sanders people), with this internal squabbling within the Vatican and the teaching institution there about how the invitation came about just adds an unseemly element to the story. Add to that, Pope Frances himself felt the need to clarify to the press that his greeting Sen. Sanders was âgood mannersâ and in no way to be construed as âpolitical.â Again, unfortunately for the Pope, there will always be a question of politics when a U.S. Presidential candidate meets with him. Thatâs just the nature of the beast.
OK, now I see why you chose the spun version.
"What I will tell you is I was very proud to have been invited by the
Vatican to an important conference dealing with morality in economics,
" Sanders said. "And the fact that I was invited there was very â for me,
a very moving experience."
Once again⌠I was invited there â Once again⌠I was invited there â
Once again⌠I was invited there â Once again⌠I was invited there â Once again⌠I was invited there â Once again⌠I was invited there â Once again⌠I was invited there â
Oh good grief!
YES he was invited there, YES, the Pope asked him to meet in the lobby before he left for Greece, and YES:
THIS IS EXCELLENT NEWS! FOR HILLARY!! (or whoever is the eventual democratic party nominee)
Now can the Bernie haters crawl back under their rocks and let adults have the conversation back?
Yay for our side.
Booyah
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) said in an interview aired Sunday
that meeting with Pope Francis was a âvery moving experience.â
While Pope Francis was moving toward a scheduled obligation-- he was courteous to acknowledge Sen Sanders-- whose campaign moved heaven and earth to create news buzz surrounding a non-event-- while spending $400k to charter a jet to transport 10 family members on a non-political vacation-- 2-days prior to the make-or-break primary for the Democratic nomination for President Of The United States.
Nope. Nothing to see here.
Just bad optics on everybody elseâs part.
Move along.

Smells like SOUR GRAPES
Nothing except a win for the progressive agenda. An American politician, a high-profile candidate for POTUS was invited to an influential vatican intellectual panel and spoke for 10 minutes on having a moral economy. This received worldwide attention.
If people canât see that this benefits all democrats, then maybe they are spending too much time in a bubble.
Good for Bernie does NOT mean bad for Hillary.
Get a grip.
The speech had worldwide attention? Funny part is i havenât really heard anything from this magically world altering speech, only about who invited who and how much it cost and other things like that.
After being invited to meet the Pope he just â happened â to be in the foyer when the Pope went for a walk . Riiiight .
Excepting that I have no issue with Sen Sanders attending the conference.
What Iâm expressing is the incredibly poor judgement of his campaign staff.
As I posted on another TPM thread this morning:
Which circles back around to an amazingly poor litany of decisions over these last 2-3 weeksâ
by the advisors and staff running the Senatorâs campaign.
Independent of the motivation(s)-- of these several gaffes, missteps, and out-and-out tone-deaf moments-- does no one ingrained in the Sanders campaign have any sense of introspection or clarity-- even after any of these unforced errors?
Iâm left unimpressed by the decision-making of supposed campaign professionals.
The optics are really, really poor bwak. They are.
And independent of what conculsion you have jumped to regarding my motivation for the previous post?
I have not personally denigrated Sen Sanders during this entire primary season.
But I donât hesitate to call out the gaggle of rank amateurs heâs got running his campaign.
Those who are advising him are longtime campaign advisers with horrible records of success.
So, to you too-- get a grip.

Sanders said that âno one is suggesting that the Pope is embracing my policies.â
Oh, brother.
I thought it had been determined that Sanders basically invited himself to this conference, and then lingered about where the Pope was forced to walk by him? Why is there no definite reporting on these simple facts? This story fast became the Kennedy assassination to the press.
You thought wrong.
