Discussion: Sanders: I ‘Could Not Refuse’ Vatican Trip Even If It Took Me Off 2016 Trail

So the Pope made you an offer you could not refuse.

Did he also say “Someday, and that day may never come, I’ll call upon you to do a service for me.”?

And I needed to bring 4 kids and 7 grandkids for a 10 minute speech and to not meet the Pope!

This is just weird, right?

According to Margaret Archer, the President of the Academy, it was Sanders who requested the invite.

O reeeeeeally! Why am I so very not surprised,

Actually, he never met with the Pope. I thought that was the whole purpose of the trip

You just said what I was going to.

It was Sanders (or his campaign) who requested the invitation to speak. The invitation was not extended to him first. Yes, this is an important distinction. In addition, it’s really unseemly to try to inject the Vatican in a campaign for some office. Just a very clumsy attempt at glad handing by his campaign.

Your source please? There was much discussion and argument about who invited who and when a few days ago on this site, so I am curious to know the source of your post. Also, I am curious to know how the Senator traveled to Rome (commercial air, private plane, what?) and how the trip was paid for (his own pocket, campaign funds, a go fund me account, what?). If anyone can point me to these information sources, I would appreciate it.

Ross Perot and John McCain could not agree with you more Sen Sanders.
Though this won’t end well if history is any indicator.

Call me a cynic but his wife is Catholic, so even though Bernie is a cultural Jew with not much of a religious affinity, I think to refuse the invitation would have probably rubbed his wife and their kids the wrong way.

The problem with that there is that there was no invitation to refuse. They didn’t invite him. He invited himself in.

I could not refuse to have an orgy with multiple Victoria’s Secret models. No one asked me, but I could not refuse.

And he was making a ten-minute speech on inequality—after spending $6000 an hour to rent a jet to fly to Rome.

The irony is so thick it would take a chainsaw to cut it.

What invitation? HE asked to participate.

I thought someone did invite him, just not the chief muckety-mucks close to the Pope. My mistake I guess.

Tries to rope the Pope in on this when the Pope had nothing to do with it.

Did he actually rent a jet?

It was Monday when they finally gave him a 10 minute slot to speak. Fellow Leftists, President Evo Morales of Bolivia and President Rafael Correa of Ecuador were actually invited far ahead of the Conference by the Pope. He should be grateful they gave him a chance to save face, since he wasn’t on the original Program.

It’s my understanding that he requested an invite to the conference. They then extended an invite. Voila, his invitation.

In addition, in the process of doing so, they went through the wrong Vatican channels and got the invite from a person who normally doesn’t do them so THAT caused some consternation as well. I would imagine the Vatican is very big on protocol. The whole situation was just handled very clumsily.
