Discussion for article #238267
'Republican Rep. Jenny Horne reminded her colleagues she was a descendent of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and scolded fellow members of her party for stalling the debate with dozens of amendments.
She cried as she remembered the funeral of her slain colleague state Sen. Clementa Pinckney, the pastor of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal church, who was gunned down as his wife and daughter locked themselves in an office.
“For the widow of Sen. Pinckney and his two young daughters, that would be adding insult to injury and I will not be a part of it!” she screamed into a microphone.¨
Good for her. And it’s good for me to be reminded that Republicans - at least some of 'em - can have a heart.
Wow & bravo! The first state to secede officially declares an end to hostilities, 150 years later. Better late than never.
Here’s idea, lets add Nazi Germany and Japan’s WW11 flags to the amendment, cause you know how important it is to the dead to be remembered, even if they were the losers!
All this is just fine. But will state legislators in SC and elsewhere next move to rescind recent racist voting rights restrictions? Symbolism matters, but substnce is harder.
the flag is a reminder of how dirt-poor Southern farmers fought Yankees not because they hated blacks or supported slavery, but because their land was being invaded.
Those soldiers should be respected just as soldiers who fought in the Middle East or Afghanistan, he said, recalling his own military service.
Sorry, is he asking that we fly the ISIS flag, Iraqi flag or whatever flag whoever we were fighting in Afghanistan fly over our statehouses? Or forcing them to fly our flags in theirs? I’m confused…
And, of course, those Southern farmers would have had no problem having a flag draped on their resting sites which has designed as and has become a major symbol of racism.
“Abducted…hijacked…by racists”? No, racists are the ones who brought the flag into existence.
I applaud this-- The “lengthy debate” ,however, is telling as to how long the road ahead still is – Let us all roll up our sleeves now and, as Jeb would have it, get the fuck back to work !! –
