I can appreciate the effort to make Ryan sound as if he is, well, sane. But reality paints a much harsher picture of his own anti-intellectual, anti-government, pro-hate, Randian dystopia, from privatization of social security, to military expansion.
The fact that he apparently represents moderation to much of the media says all you need to know about modern journalistic âequivalenceâ.
Only a fully functioning House can truly represent the people and if there were ever a time for us to step up, this would be that time.
That would have been the time. Or November, or December, and so on. But that time never came. Which pundits thought this âfully functioning houseâ would be built? More to the point - did anyone think that Paul Ryan would be the politician who could build it?
This article reads like a paean to Ryan - like something his PR staff could have written. Iâm getting tired of dithering Ryan continually being cast as Hamlet.
As I see it, he knew what he was getting intoâŚand if there were any âsurprisesâ, that comes with the territory.
If he really wants a functioning House, get rid of the Hastert rule. Let everyoneâs vote count.

The only way to have a fully functioning House is to vote in a solid Democratic majority.
The fact is that Ryan is saddled with a small group of extremists who are prepared to have the House, and thus all of Congress, become non-functional, rather than compromise to pass necessary legislation. Ryan and Boehner both had and have the same choice: let this small group prevent anything from being done, or all legislation to pass with the support of Democrats and the remaining Republicans.
Seems an easy choice, but unfortunately many of the rest of the GOP in the House are scared out of their minds of being attacked in primaries by Tea Party candidates if they compromise with the Democrats. They are too worried about keeping their jobs to do their jobs.

This a very well written, thorough and thoughtful article. It is true to its title in that it takes Speaker Ryanâs perspective, and discusses the pressures on him from his world. I learned a lot.
As Iâve said before, I donât think he has a choice in support of Mr. Trump. But, this article helps me understand why he is taking his time about it.

Agreed. Ryanâs problems in the House are entirely predictable, expected and of his own doing. He is singularly ill equipped to do the actual job of being Speaker; he has very little experience or skill at courting people/bending arms, counting votes, or negotiation. And his first moves were to immediately abdicate the very powers that the Speaker has to get those things accomplished. He can no longer punish or reward anybody in his caucusâŚso what motivation do they have to work with him on anything? He surrendered the control the Speaker had over membership in committees and he surrendered the ability to manage what bills and what amendments can hit the floor. He is, for all intensive purposes, merely a figurehead now, and a pretty weak one at that.

This is the disaster looming on the horizon for the GOP this fallâŚthe October âsurpriseâ (I put it in quotes because to anybody paying attention, it wonât be a surprise). Ryan is going to default on the âbudget frameworkâ that Boehner handed him, and the House will be plunged headlong into another shutdown crisisâŚonly this time, Boehner will have no abilityâŚor skillâŚto negotiate anything to get them out of it, with the fun addition of his own partyâs presidential nominee taking pot shots at him through out.
