“Ryan has told confidants that this will be his final term as speaker.”
Oh, it will be.
Rest assured.
He knows this ain’t going to end well so he’s getting out before the shit hits the fan
“Don’t you think he looks tired?”
“Surprise, surprise, surprise.”
Gomer Pyle, 1962
Childbirth will do that to you.
Having developed a tolerance to harming them legislatively, Ryan will spend his free time in Wisconsin whipping the poor, elderly, and terminally ill.
Tired of what he hasn’t done anything since he been there
That’s not a denial.
I do think this is big news. Ryan is quitting and giving up on his Ayn Rand project. He will not get the spending cuts he has advocated for in entitlements, so he’s just gonna pass along some goodies to himself in this tax bill and call it career while the debt balloons as interest rates rise.
He will have to resign as he won’t beat Bryce as a self-made lame duck. GOP won’t be able to recruit or raise money effectively with a leader who is already out the door.
This tax bill is looking more and more like a vanity project for McConnell and Ryan and no one else. Many in the GOP have a more sober view of the political value of these tax cuts after the polling and the AL-Sen race. The fact that so few Trump voters turned out in deep red AL counties is a sign that GOP tax policies turn a lot of people off in red America. If GOPers were excited about this legislative agenda, they would’ve turned out for Trump/Moore.
I remember conversing with GOP voters during the GOP primary on FB and elsewhere and they had no great love for GOP’s tax cuts and spending cut policies. One thing GOPers don’t quite get is that there really won’t be a penalty for them if they oppose Trump and hold him accountable. AL-SEN and VA-Gov prove that. If they adopt a more moderate view on government spending, safety net and entitlements and a center-right view on immigration while maintaining their typical position on abortion, the GOP base will follow them. But these guys are too dumb to see both the opportunity and disaster that are staring them right in the face.

Edited to replace “public servant” with “Koch lackey.”

There is also this. Ryan knows it is over.
“He decided in favor of life out of sheer spite and malice.” ― Patrick Süskind, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
The voters in Wisconsin will retire Paul Ryan. After Nov 2018. the GOP loses the Majority. He will no longer be Speaker of the House.
