Well, they didn’t abandon the Assaulter in Chief.
They doubled down.

That this didn’t happen in the end is just yet further confirmation of what we can see in public: that Trump still has his grasp on the GOP’s genitalia via the base.

Related: It seems to me that this, too, is a risk of gerrymandered districts: that when your highly-selective demographic goes off the political rails yet you still want to be reelected, you can’t do the right thing and choose country over party and do your bit to give the voters a civics lesson–they’ve already been schooled by conservative media.

“Not now, not in the future.”

Statement later amended to, I will defend him now, and in the future, and look forward to him attacking me after my demise.

Agreed… but the lazy media used it as an excuse to not point out the major deficiencies of tRump

Correct…In addition, changing demographic voting patterns is difficult. By demographic tendency and temperament, GOP voters are more likely to vote…adding to the Gerrymandered advantages.

At least we still have the ability to vote…

And we have had a number of successes. We should focus more on our successes, as well as what is before us. It’s sort of like chewing gum and walking…both can be done.

I beg your pardon? The lazy media? What are you even talking about? You’re snarking, right? Because if not and you remember Ryan doing this, maybe you remember why? Because first the Washington Post and then every media outlet on the face of the earth from Greenland to Tierra del Fuego had Trump on tape talking gleefully about sexual assault? That’s not pointing out a deficiency? For the second time and it’s not even nine o’clock, do I have to point out that the motherfucking citizens of the United Fucking States thought this matter over and decided it wasn’t a problem? Am I going out of my fucking mind here? I swear this media-bashing’s getting to be more than I can take.

Both the left and the right agree that Ryan will go down as one of the worst Speakers in history (for completely different reasons, but still).

But following through would have made him a statesman, and he could not bear it.

They could? Well I guess they really liked him then.

If he had said ‘must’ instead of ‘could’, there might still have been hope for the GOP.

Yes, indeed! Valiant Sir Paul whispered it forcefully when he was sitting in the stall of the House bathroom while he was having a hard poo.

I see the GOP listened to Ryan’s advice almost as much as AOC did. LOL!

So rather than stay and fight he quit. What else could we expect from Paul Ryan? He was overrated from the getgo.

Wasn’t it widely reported at the time that Ryan released House Republicans in the immediate aftermath of the Access Hollywood tape?

“I am not going to defend Donald Trump,” Ryan said,“Not now, not in the future”

“…but in between now and the future… yeah, I’ll still be supporting him.”

How do you abandon your party’s standard bearer that close to an election without cutting off your own gonads?

OT, but the shit is getting real in the UK.

May is flying to Berlin and Paris to plead for a short extension. [Brexit is scheduled for Friday]
Businesses in Northern Ireland are panicking.
The harshness of a no-deal Brexit is finally becoming clear.
Rumors are swirling as to whether May will revoke Article 50 if she can’t get an extension beyond Friday.

ETA 2–
The EU is upping the ante for Ireland (the country) by threatening to withdraw from any trade talks with the UK if it does a no-deal Brexit on Friday without any backstop provision (open customs border betwn. Northern Ireland and Ireland). EU is basically threatening Tory hardliners with economic ruin for the UK unless they cave on this issue. https://www.theguardian.com/politics/live/2019/apr/08/brexit-latest-news-live-theresa-may-union-most-likely-outcome-if-labour-and-government-can-compromise-says-minister-live-news
