Not really. Its not that his district is particularly red…but he himself wins by large margins. And now as Speaker, his warchest to vend off any such competitor is much bigger.

On the other hand, you know what would be a great sign for democracy? If the longstanding wish of the majority of the voters and gun owners to have universal background checks, at least, were honored. It would be a great sign if the GOP would allow the Congress to take one baby step toward ending this country’s disgraceful plague of gun violence by guaranteeing that gun dealers not sell guns to people who are adjudicated not to be able to own them. If people could govern themselves and get their wishes respected on a matter of life and death, that would be a quite excellent sign for democracy, you damn sniveling coward.

And here is the funniest/saddest part of this…

…the bill would be voted down, without any doubt. But Ryan is merely trying to protect his caucus from voting in a way that plays out really bad for the voters in the wake of the Orlando shootings.

In other words, he is purposefully protecting his caucus FROM the democratic backlash of the voters.

It is Ryan and his comrades who have a warped sense of what democracy really is. The Democrats’ sit-in demanding only a vote on common sense gun legislation - legislation that the vast majority of the people of the country want - is exactly what democracy demands. They are not demanding that they will win the vote…only that there be a vote. It will be the people to decide in November how to deal with the Republican member’s response to the sit-in and to the vote…if it even happens.

Yeah, I know. He doesn’t want the GOP’s pants pulled down so everyone can see that big NRA brand on their butts. I don’t think he’s stupid. But I do think he’s a coward. He’s always trying to split the difference in situations where people with more moral courage step up and declare themselves.

The best for us would have been to force them on the record on the bill, but I think the fact he refused to bring it up for a vote – and cutting off TV cameras and microphones to blackout and all – is a bad optic already.
