Discussion: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Attends 'Terror' Opera While Giuliani Protests Outside

Discussion for article #229104

I’m reminded of the (off-color) joke back then, that PLO stood for Push Leon Overboard.

Fucking pantwetters. They’ll be the first ones to cry “you’re stepping on my free speech” the second someone criticizes them for making hateful islamaphobic statements. And good for Ginsburg for seeing it for herself to determine what she thinks of it…they’ll be attacking her next.

Peter King won’t have been protesting if the opera had been about Patrick Magee. He would have been selling tickets and attending a VIP party.

‘Terrorism’ Opera?
Are you kidding me?

You can’t call it “John Adams’ opera,” or “controversial opera” in the headline?

You’re just going all in with “Terrorism opera?”

It’s okay because she more than likely slept through most of it.

Three cheers for The Notorious RBG!!

So, Ginsburg the Jew goes to see what’s up, while Jewliani stands outside to wave the bloody flag of racism.

Giuliani and King are cheap attention-whores who aren’t fit to shine RBG’s shoes.

I’m old enough to remember Klinghoffer’s murder. He died not because of his character or morality or lack there of or because he had a big mouth or an ugly nose–He died solely because he was of Jewish ethnic heritage. That he was the handicapped and probably the physically weakest person on the entire ship does not speak well for the Palestinian cause. Still, we are talking about an opera now, art. The protesters like Guiliani and King do not speak for the Jewish people–they speak only for the right wing. Most Jewish people know that censorship and particularly right-wing censorship will come back to bite them. They also know that it has been the self-righteous right that has been the most hateful and violent towards the Jews. Meanwhile where are Guiliani and King about all the anti-semites and other bigots in the Republican Party. Silence! No surprise.

Last night’s protestors remind me of those Germans back in the '30s who tried to close down decadent Jewish art.

To me, this is just another sign post on the road to ruin for Republicans. When their leadership is out protesting the discussion of unpopular ideas in the arts, then they are truly lost.

What next, book burnings?

I know John Adams and this opera well. It is a beautiful piece of music…and in no way “terrorist” or even glorifying the killing. It’s thoughtful and insightful. It is totally ridiculous that these people are protesting, and they haven’t even SEEN the opera. They only know what it’s vaguely about, and protest against it. It’s embarrassing. They have their right to protest, but it’s ignorant to not know what you are actually protesting…there’s nothing anti-semitic in the work. The Met is right to perform it.

Where was Nino? He and RBG often go to the opera together.

The TPM article is wrong: this is NOT the “New York debut” for DoK (as it’s known to opera nuts): rather, this is its NY Met Opera House debut. It debuted in NYC the first year it ame out, in 1991.

It is quite beautiful. When I first saw it - TWO DECADES AGO - it struck me the way most avante garde operas do: that it was hard to take until the sounds had time to percolate down. Like many, I bought a recording, which I’ve listened to at least 5 times, and each time I get more out of it. Adams is our best opera composer, to me the best since WWII, longer depending on what one makes of Gershwin’s Porgy & Bess. It’s better than Bernstein’s Candide, and no doubt better than any other American opera in over a half century, EXCEPT for the fact that Adams has composed at least two others as good or arguably better. I used to prefer Adams’ “Nixon in China” to it, but to me DoK is better constructed and more thought-provoking.

It doesn’t seek to glorify terrorism or terrorists; it tries to portray them as humans, not animals, and products of their location and the times. And maybe even Mr. Klinghofer himself would accept that, without Adams’ opera, he’d be just another victim of terrorism forgotten in time.

Giuliani is like those zombies in the movies that keep walking around and don’t know they’re dead. Why does anyone care what he says?

True to form for that self-promoter Rudy Giuliani, President of 9/11. He’s a complete fraud and hack.

I’m amazed that American right wingers like Guliani can say with a straight face that they are concerned with the “Middle East peace process” and not sabotaging it at every opportunity.
