I predicted this would be the case at the time. Trump’s rise in the nomination race is actually rather more suspicious than his general election result.

A Republican Senator re-elected in 2018 would be sitting pretty to run for President in both 2020 (against the sitting President) and 2024 without being worried about being primaried. I haven’t looked at the list, but Rubio is definitely NOT on it.

As I said in another thread, this story puts to rest the “theory” that Putin was just out to weaken Hillary on her inevitable way to the WH.
It is clear now that Putin specifically and very actively worked to install Trump as POTUS. The only remaining question: was Trump a passive beneficiary of this project, or an active partner?
