Discussion: Ron Johnson

Truly reprehensible and a sorry excuse for a human being never mind a sitting Senator.

I don’t believe Johnson’s last campaign was that heavily financed by the Kochs; certainly not in comparison to Walker’s. Johnson ponied up himself and basically rode the TP wave in 2010. That wave has ebbed quite a bit now.

Nor are the Kochs willing to spend endless amounts of money on every campaign. There are something like 26 seats that republicans have to defend in 2016, and a herd of presidential hopefuls, not even counting numerous House and state level elections. That all adds up to a LOT of people begging for money. Hard decisions are going to have to be made, and I think Johnson is going to be one of the first cut loose. He can still put together pretty substantial money from his own fortune, but I don’t know how willing he is going to be to do that.

Feingold on the other hand, should be one of the prime beneficiaries from Democratic money, and he seems to be taking the right steps in preparing for a campaign. Early polling already has him up by 10ish points, and while obviously that is close, the dynamics of a potential Feingold-Johnson race aren’t the same as Hagan-Tillis. The most glaring difference being that Hagan was/is viewed as more of a Blue Dog, while Feingold is beloved by the Progressives. That’s going to make a difference with fund raising.

It’s also the Meth lab capital of Alaska. You figure with all of those churches drug consumption would decrease.

This is where we disagree. I don’t think people have fully gotten their heads around the magnitude of what we’re talking about here. There aren’t any “hard decisions” for the Koch-related groups. They’ve already pledged almost nine hundred million dollars this year to spend next year. They can dump ten million into every seat they have to defend and still have two thirds left over for the seats Democrats are defending and the presidential race.

And there’s more where that came from. By the time all is said and done, there will be at least a billion and a half right wing plutocrat dollars in the next campaign not including the official candidate and party money.

Kay Hagan down here was outspent 2:1 in official campaign contributions. That doesn’t even count the ten to twenty million the Koch fronts dumped into the race. She was absolutely swamped for the better part of eight months.

I hate to go all Andrew Sullivan debate meltdowny here, but when you combine all that money with the clear strategy of doing everything they can to pump up the dread over the prospect of the resumption of the Clinton Wars, you can get an awful lot of the holy and sanctified “swing voter” morons who pay no attention but still feel the need to vote going for the Republican just to placate the child throwing the tantrum in the supermarket so it’ll shut the hell up.

Job interviews for those about to be fired .
