“everything we know about politics has to be wrong. And I don’t think it is”
President “Landslide” Romney totally agrees.

This guy is hilarious!!! And, Mitt and Ann are at home thinking (and hoping) the Repub power brokers will give them a ring and beg Mitt to run. It’s all hilarious, I tell ya!!!
Mittens top adviser? Well he should know!
Let me clarify that statement…no gop/bagger will ever be president.
There all fixed!
Sometimes huge mixed doses of cynicism and reality (that would be your post) are just what’s needed in discussions of Trump’s probabilities and chances. Do people want to believe Stevens is right? What am I missing?
I agree Trump will never be President, but he may very well be the GOP nominee for the job.
When are the Republican elites going to get it. The Republican base just isn’t into them anymore. I am not sure a lot of Democrats haven’t decided the Democratic elites are wrong for them too. Frankly, this country sucks as an oligarchy. Too many smart people aren’t billionaires.
Shouldn’t be a problem for Trump to destroy that with one tweet. Wait for it.
Let the GOP factions rip each other apart. The Dems, however, are looking at a less strained but nearly equally divided base. Sen. Sanders and HRC look like they may go down to the wire too, and the Democrats may have every bit as much trouble uniting around one candidate next year as GOP Inc. will.
Cleareyed les, help me understand this discussion. Stevens could well be right, but the crowd is ridiculing his opinion. Why? Moreover, Trump’s Making America Swell Again hat is made in China, and yet he uses China as a punching bag, insults them in so many ways, but is happy to send business their way because they supply cheap labor. I see that as just one more hypocritical instance of his approach to politics.
I think people really do want to believe Stevens here, but the very very worst thing we could possibly do is dismiss Trump and fail to take him…and, more importantly, his shiny loud appeal to a huge moronic voting bloc…seriously, because Sanders has some substantial “electability” issues and Team Clinton, so far, seems to all be running around in clown pantsuits.
these political advisors will say whatever is necessary to insure there’s a check on its way… who cares what they say; they are obviously clueless about what the people want. what continues to fascinate me is watching these political ‘reporters’ yammer on about what a surprise it is to see such discontent among the voters. it’s even more alarming how utterly out of touch these two parties are with their constituents.
Watching Clint up there on stage, making a fool of himself, I felt sorry for him. He’s actually a really nice, fair-minded guy – which always made me wonder why he’s still a Republican. I know of a few others like him. I think their attachment to the GOP is from yesteryear – even then, I think they didn’t quite get that the Republicans don’t give one chit about us below a certain income level or personal worth.
You make some very good points, littlegirlblue. Personally, I do have a bit more faith in the American electorate than I sometimes indicate – but then I can’t ever forget about GWBush, whom I despised (and still do). At this stage–like you said, The Don hasn’t even won any primaries–I give him about 5% -10% chance of ever taking the oath. I realize that is high, but I always remember Dubya … pat-hoooey, pat-hoooooey! (just clearing my throat).
Yep, and with a minimum of four viable factions determining the outcome of next years election (liberals, establishment Democrats, establishment Republicans, teabaggers … and one could count Twisted Christians as a viable faction too), there is a path for a nutcase like Trump to reach the White House.
I don’t much care for comparisons to Nazi Germany but in 1932 when the Nazi party became the majority party in the Reichstag, paving the way for Hitler to become chancellor, there were eight separate political parties in Germany at the time … just pointing that out because the US has at least five right now.
Scared yet? Should be!!
Which has absolutely no bearing on how Joe Blow votes. Don’t take Trump seriously, you’ll get burned. Assume Clinton is the heir apparent and get burnt. Sometimes I think Dems can be so brain dead about politics.
The mood of the country is that government doesn’t work. Many many people want a non politician at the helm, however fool hardy that is. So what do the Dems do? They put the career politician Clinton against (if Trump makes it to the ticket, and he will if the GOP is smart) a real maverick. This is not looking good, and people keep denying it.
Trump has won no primaries, has issued no substantive policies or coherent thoughts for that matter, has high negatives among Latinos, low support among African Americans, low favorability among women, so are the moronic supporters actually going to get out to vote?
Bernie has problems with AA support, Clinton does not. Team Clinton is not the klown kar krowd you think them to be, IMO, they helped elect the first Clinton, and the president.
You are being too logical, littlegirlblue. Logic would tell the old, grumpy racists–and the yung-uns, too–that the fact Donald makes that stupid hat in China and that his own line of clothing as “Proudly Made in Mexico for Donald Trump” what a snake-oil salesman the guy is – but they are very angry and want their guy to be, too; they are angry that the conventional politicians (nearly ALL the Repub candidates except Carson, Fiorina and Trump) haven’t really delivered on all those dog-whistle promises. Well, now they have a man who doesn’t even bother with dog whistles–he uses the same vocabulary as they do–and he’s mega-wealthy, to boot(!), which must mean the guy knows how to run things!! Remember, this is their logic – (obviously) not ours.
Well, all I can say is my first instinct is like others in this thread in that the Romney posse are pretty reliable reverse parameters. If they say sky is blue, go outside and confirm beach it likely isn’t.
So there is that aspect of the mockery which I am more than a little sympathetic to.
I often get a bit of a chill or a spontaneous shudder when thinking of Trump. First, so many of his fanatical flock voted for George W. Bush and STILL think Dumbya’ was a ‘great’ president. Then I think, "OMFG! George W. Bush WAS actually president!
{{{shudder #1}}}.
And then I remember something my grandfather once said when Ronald Reagan was running for the presidency: “You don’t have to worry. There is no way in hell Reagan will ever be elected president.”
{{{shudder #2}}}
I’m convinced that Donald Trump is this republic’s big ol’ hairy unlubricated rectal thermometer and perhaps we had to have him make this mad run for president to see just how fu*king sick we are, and so this has to run its course.
Trump’s threat is as serious as a heart attack, but I also see the tendency for people to believe what the paid campaign industry is telling us about pols and what we the voters want and will do about it without examining the reality of where his support comes from and more importantly where it does not come from .
