I know that the plural of anecdote is not data, as they say, but I have four young friends for whom DACA has made all the difference. They were able to get their driver’s license, which is a huge deal. We live in a rural community in NC. There is no public transportation, and the local police routinely have checkpoints to check for a driver’s license: the fines are $275 for each infraction. These checkpoints are so common that the Hispanic community has an app that alerts them when it is happening.
All my young friends are working at good jobs. One has gotten promotion after promotion at Lowe’s. They have bought cars. One and his parents bought a house. I cannot even begin to tell you what wonderful kids these are. If President Obama had done nothing else in his eight years but give my young friends this opportunity,I would bless him forever.
I do hope that actual legislation can be passed. It’s too uncertain to leave their future to the whim of a president.
Don’t you think it will be that Ivanka, a mother after all, prevails on him to think of the children?
We’ll see, but Trump’s natural inclination is to destroy anything and everything Obama did.
Whew. For a minute there, I was worried I was going to have to pay him a grudging compliment. Well, okay, I’ll do it anyway. These last two or three months, he has shown himself to be a millimeter less horrible than I expected.
But jesus, we could use Kay Hagan about now. Fuck you Koch Brother, fuck you every goddamn idiot in this state who was taken in by those Koch Brother ads with a Concerned Mom walking around saying exactly nothing about health care but expressing her Very Deep Concern.
Don’t you just hate bleeding-heart supervillains?
PS-You beat me to it.
As Republican strategist Rick Wilson has coined: ETTD™ for Everything Trump Touches Dies.
Read this and it will make perfect sense.
Excellent read. Outstanding analysis. Well worth your time.
“Unlike the right wing fantasies of ‘white genocide’ and the ‘Global Jewish Conspiracy’, the left is grounded in reality and they know exactly who is responsible for the pollution, propaganda, and poverty that is crushing this country (and the world). Rather than some shadowy made up enemy, they know that the Kochs, the Mercers, Sheldon Adelson, oil companies, Wall Street banks, the pharmaceutical industry, etc. etc. are spending billions to buy politicians, take over country and turn us into modern day serfs.”
*Fun Fact: A typical ratio is 10 inches of snow equals 1 inch of water. Using that metric, Houston got the equivalent of 43 feet of snow in three days. Wrap your head around that!
Yet this very week, PBS ran a documentary where multiple academics who have jumped on the Oil Oligopoly bandwagon of Climate Change Denial were allowed to parrot their skepticism. I was able to stomach it for about 15 minutes, but they were talking about Alaska as I channel surfed through. Was early mid week. I chalked it down to Exquisite Timing of the Right’s Perenial Bullying of PBS by threatening funding cuts, and the existence of the Koch Bros as major corporate donors.
Exactly. They’re trying to make Obama look bad, but instead, are highlighting their own hypocrisy.
Nothing has changed as to the Dreamers from the Obama days, so why couldn’t they have acted then?
Foolish virgin.
Please protect the Dreamers. So many if not most of them are in school or work hard at a job. They make America great again. Yes, if there are some with felonies or member of a gang, deport them. ICE, however, seems to do a poor job of distinguishing between “bad hombres” and Latinos who are are a credit to our nation.
I stood with a group of interfaith clergy and other people of faith in a nonviolent direct action meant to keep the white nationalists from entering the park to their hate rally. We had far fewer people holding the line than we had hoped for, and frankly, it wasn’t enough. No police officers in sight (that I could see from where I stood), and we were prepared to be beaten to a bloody pulp to show that while the state permitted white nationalists to rally in hate, in the many names of God, we did not. But we didn’t have to because the anarchists and anti-fascists got to them before they could get to us. I’ve never felt more grateful and more ashamed at the same time. The antifa were like angels to me in that moment.

We could use more terrorists like that.
They correctly expect that this issue will do for the GOP nationally what Prop 187 did for the California party.
Want to turn Texas purple in a hurry? This might do the trick.
I want to keep DACA, and I want Trump in jail for #rape and #RICO, but I also want Voldemort Scott destroyed and disintegrated as well. Who to root for?!?
Wouldn’t it be funny if the first major piece of legislation of the Trump era is one that make DACA a law? Trump’s head would explode.
He wont. The voting latinos in Flroda are mostly Cuban and they all vote republican no matter what, 'cause Democrats are socialists just like Fidel.
If it were 14 F, you could have a 20 - 1 ratio, so it could have been 86´
Of course, cold air can hold a lot less water than warm air, which is one of the reasons that global warming will lead to more extreme wet storms.
“These kids must be allowed to pursue the American Dream,” he wrote.
Funny how it was such a “bad” idea when Obama made it happen.
Ryan wants Trump to keep DACA, because otherwise there will be demands that Congress deal with the issue of “Dreamers” and that’s a hugely divisive issue among republicans in the House, someone is going to scream: Amnesty! And that will be enough to scare a majority of republicans. Ryan’s own position would be at risk.
That said I don’t know what Rick Scott gets out of Trump retaining DACA. Deplorables are thick in the ground in Florida and keeping those happy more than makes up for the few upset latinos.
Donnie knows that killing DACA is the wrong thing to do. He’s been hearing this analysis from all angles.
Unfortunately, he heeds the voices in his head far more than he listens to his advisors or the American people, and the voices tell him:
“If Obama was for it, then I will definitely be against it. Period!”
