Discussion: Rich Lowry's 'Callow' Attack Is, Well, Juvenile

Discussion for article #226362

History preserves the words when writers like Lowry
work so hard for their Judith-Miller-moments.
Those who sell wrong-headedness for a buck
always seem surprised when their
reputational stock drops precipitously.

RW fever-talk has an expiry.
It’s sell-by date is the present.
It’s potency no longer lasting.
The demographic it’s aimed at-- fading, dying.

Lowry. Battling to be the loudest of the wrong.

Rich is such a precient judge of character, how can we forget his deep to the point, spot on observations of Sarah Palin

" I’m sure I’m not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, “Hey, I think she just winked at me.” And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America. This is a quality that can’t be learned; it’s either something you have or you don’t, and man, she’s got it."

Yes Rich, it is true, it cant be learned, you either have something or you dont. You dont Rich.

Lowry is the most reflexive “Obama Bad”. This latest screed was ridiculous at best.

Callow is all Rich Lowry knows.

Have to agree. Nice line - “but by making an argument with all the staying power of the bar napkin…” - and then it all seemed to go its own way.

Anyone who is a) familiar with political scribblers and b) capable of self-awareness, embarrassment, and common sense, will forever think of “starbursts” and smirk when he or she thinks of Rick Lowry. The two things are welded unbreakably together. As for that winking, here’s what James Fallows had to say: “I will say nothing about the dignity of a candidate who repeatedly winks at the public, Hooters-waitress style.” But then Fallows is an adult, and so is Obama. Lowry, who is obviously a perennial adolescent, should not be calling people callow.

Here’s what I don’t get…

Let’s be generous and say that in 2008 Sarah Palin was hot and sexy. She certainly wasn’t unattractive, but let’s bump her up a notch to “yummy”.

And? Does Lowry not have a regular TV? The internet? Magazines? A window? A Starbucks to stand in line at? Whatever?

There are attractive women all over the place.

TPM - Come to be disappointed by the articles, stay to read the comments that are usually better (but also have the staying power of a bar napkin, since you’ll never find them again once an article is no longer new).

Cowardly little men writing paid-for (and pre-screened if not wholly ghost-written by their Oligarch owners) articles attacking someone who actually DOES SOMETHING USEFUL.
This is the propaganda ministry of the Reich-Wingers. It only exists to gin-up the knuckle-draggers and sycophants to bring in the $$$$ and and votes in a vain hope to ingratiate themselves with the rich and powerful people they know they will NEVER BE and who will NEVER ACCEPT THEM.
Pitiful really.

This is one of those sublime kind of put downs that one wishes they could have written. Delicious.

Excellent perspective on Mr. Obama and his post analog era circumvention of callow echo chamber accordionists like Lowry in this article’s role as tea-infused winger media everyman.
Perhaps the restlessly energetic Dubya’s military build-up of local police forces nervously anticipated this digital awakening and collapse of post WWII echo chambered control?

The Villagers are tired of all this adult governance. It is uninteresting and has insufficient explosions and flying body parts and too much emphasis on numbers and stuff rather than how people feel in their guts and what the Just Know Must be True. Back when the cool psychotic kids were in charge of the house, things were fun and entertaining and staffed by The Right Sort. Yeah, sure, they set the house on fire and trashed the place and damage that cost vast sums to fix, and the whole thing was just out of control, and, with all that going on it did seem like having an adult set some boundaries might be nice.

But now they’re soooo over that. They want the cool psychotic kids back. And if that means bending all their powers toward a concerted campaign of distortion and disdain that flips the narrative so that the psychotic kids are portrayed as the real adults and the real adults are deemed “callow,” well, it wouldn’t be the first time. Worked like a charm in 2000.

Of course, now there’s that darned “Internet” thing to contend with in ways they didn’t have to in 2000, but surely they still have the power to define how the people who don’t pay much attention to politics but still insist on voting view things, don’t they?

Lowery’s idea of a great thinker is Sarah Palin. That’s all you need ot know about this mental midget’s capacity for higher thinking. He’s the kid from high school who thought that torturing freshmen was good, clean fun. He’s the guy in the fraternity who thought hazing was a good idea. He’s a repellent little six-year old who’s been given a platform at NRO and thinks he is the reincarnation of William Safire. He’s really the bastard child of Joseph Pulitzer and Pat Buchanan. Let’s all ignore this little shit, shall we?

For the longest time Lowery’s face has expressed his inner sorrow that “this is my job? Doing what I really don’t believe.” But he does it anyway and the face gets more and more sad.

Little richie lowry is juvenile… WFB said that he had spent his life separating the right from the kooks… He is sopinning in his grace…Lowry has embarrassed WFB, conservatives , and bankrupted N Review!

I actually finished this entire article, it started out so well, the bar napkin line was truly unique. Examples of presidential comments that will go down in a “quotes and quips” book rather than wisdom and insight analysis kept me in there and then at the end to take a cheap shot at Obama himself he discredited his entire screed against Lowry.

“By putting a policy on display and waiting for the public to recognize its obvious superiority—instead of, you know, selling it—Obama leaves himself open to hackish attempts at presidential analysis. It would be enough to disagree with a president on what he has done instead of conjuring a specter to whom Lowry can feel superior.”

In high school we were taught you can’t define a word using the word, well you can’t write an insightful criticism of one person’s comments if you in the end wipe all that out with your own comment in the same vein. Was this a critique or Lowry or an excuse to get a jab in at Obama?

Jesus, did high school horny Richie actually say that? My experience has been when a woman winks at me she either wants to engage me in an all cash business transaction or catch me in a police prostitution sting.
