Discussion: Republicans Tell Iran A Nuclear Deal Won't Outlast Obama Presidency

Discussion for article #234110

Can anyone imagine what would have happened if all Democratic Senators had sent a letter to Saddam Hussein telling them they wouldn’t go to war over Bush’s bullshit claim of WMD, no matter what the President ordered the country to do? Maybe that’s not a perfect example, but I’m blown away by the brazen disregard and disrespect they’ve given the President in this matter.

This letter is tantamount to treason in my opinion.

Was waiting to see how long someone at TPM got around to this as a front page story today. This is un-fucking-believable. Never in all my years have I seen an opposition party try to run roughshod over a President conducting foreign policy who’s working as the nation’s Commander in Chief, like this Congress has.

Being that the GOP will not hold the White House for the foreseeable future how is it that what they say is even worth the paper it’s written on?

Ten years ago, these same people were crying “traitor!” to those that disagreed with then-President Bush. Now they openly undermine the sitting president and the media can’t remember past yesterday.

Agreed. How is this not treason?

So the GOP are explicitly undermining Executive Branch authority and traditions regarding who sets foreign policy in the United States and violating the Logan Act.

Way to go you anti-America fucksticks known as the GOP.

Here’s hoping, but what are we as sane-rational people doing to ensure that outcome?

Is anybody checking on the Dixie Chicks to make sure they are not needing an intervention to talk them down off of jumping off a tall bridge somewhere?

Its a fucking cabal, that’s what it is. First, they don’t all show up at Selma because…black people want/need justice in America. Then they don’t let the President conduct foreign policy and diplomacy because…Americans don’t want/need another war. Fucking craven fascist pigs these Republicans are.

Freshman Senator Cotton should really learn from his namesake and stuff cotton in his mouth and STFU, along with the other 46 Thugs that signed that letter.

Unless someone explains why it isn’t I have to think it’s a huge violation of the spirit if not the letter of the Logan Act. This Tom Cotton is out of control, and so is Congress. Unbelievable.

This is what Anarchy really looks like and how its conducted…straight out of the hell-hole that is the Republican led Congress. They’ve challenged the President on every Executive Order and every successful passing of laws by his administration, and now this shit. These Republicans feel they aren’t held to the same rules, norms, or protocols from years of tradition and a shared common history in this country. And worse yet, no one holds them to that either. It makes my blood boil.

THEY HAVE NO SHAME, nor are they expected to be responsible by anyone in our media. IOKIYAR. We are so fucked.

Which is why 47 Thugs signed that bullshit apparently. One can only surmise that they believe if they commit this type of felony in unison, or in large numbers, maybe there won’t be any consequences to what they’re doing.

Agreed. Here is the relevant passage of the Logan Act:

Any citizen of the United States, wherever he may be, who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government or any officer or agent thereof, with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government or of any officer or agent thereof, in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.

How is this NOT a clear violation of the Logan Act?

Why isn’t TPM asking about this and pushing for answers as to how this is not a violation of the law?

Not in foreign policy, certainly. There doesn’t seem to be any norm they won’t violate, any boundary they’ll respect.

The 114th US Congress apparently is the end of American Democracy.

GOP - Gerrymander Our Priorities. Fuck the American Way!

I’m not a legal expert, certainly there are few here at TPM, would this be treason or sedition?

TPM is still trying to get over the wording…like, teehee it says “intercourse with any foreign government”. That’s my guess.

I do not think it falls under the legal definition of either sedition or treason, but pretty clearly violates the Logan Act in my mind.

Such irony, in June 2007, Rep. Steve King introduced legislation that would prohibit then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi from drawing on Federal funds to travel to foreign states which the U.S. deems to sponsor terrorism. King claimed that Pelosi’s dialogue with the Syrian government violated the Logan Act.

All of a sudden the obstruction Party wants to get involved in politics and guess what, its a plan to obstruct the President. Just like clockwork, except that the need to be more and more extreme has led them into treasonous territory.

Iran has to be hoping for a Clinton Presidency, at least in secret. Bill was a unifier and friend to the world and Dummy Bush declared Iran evil. Iran doesn’t want war with America, that’s Netanyahu’s wet dream.
Considering that just a few days ago, Netanyahu stood before these same Republicans and called Iran everything but pig fuckers, I doubt that the powers that be in Iran will listen to right wing ideology from any country.
Iran remembers Bush I guarantee you and they know that he has ruined Republicans chances of holding the office of President for many years to come thus rendering this hollow warning even more worthless.

Republicans are playing more pissing match games and they are getting more and more dangerous. Especially considering the fact that President Obama’s plans are successful. Will they override a successful plan and cease peace just in an attempt to retroactively hurt a man that they can’t touch in real time?

This is another plan not thought through that will crash and burn just like the Shutdown America game.
