I am going to be a contrarian and suggest that Frum misses on this particular point. Republicans, particularly the politicians, gave up on democracy long before they might be in the cold democratically, long before they should have anything to fear from democracy.
Last time I checked, they occupied all branches of the Federal government in the majority as democratically (at least sort of) elected officials. But where is their payback to those democratic institutions that trusted them with those high, even entitled, positions? Worse than nothing, instead those same GOP politicians have attacked those same institutions as radicals against our democracy.
What I think Frum misses is that the long-evolving Trumpian GOP is not a dead beast. We hope it becomes so and evolves to something respectable, even decent, but that point in time is still far away. All we have at the moment is beat them at the ballot box. I believe that selective pressures might have something to do with evolution, may be even in politics.
The Trumpian GOP politicians do not fear democracy, they hate and despise it. It is not to their liking because democratic institutions might disrupt their pay for play. Fear is only for the gullible.

OT: I’m out. The last few weeks have been an unending stream of painful memories and nightmares such as I’ve not had since the years after I was raped. Depression is a real issue for me. Feeling anger, pain, and rage about something that I cannot change, and just get worse by the day, is more that I can continue doing. For me, it’s time to get out. These last two weeks have overcome what I can face anymore. I’m tired of fighting. If there is a glimmer of light again, maybe I’ll return, but everything is too dark now, and just too god damn painful. I feel like a coward say this, and I am ashamed.

I’m a male and these past couple years have been horrific, even without the triggered pain of assault layered on top. I am off to see a counselor today just to try to stabilize; I can’t even begin to imagine having to deal with the horrors of this maladministration coupled with the triggering of past horrors.
I hope you can find some peace again in your journey.

3 - you are not a coward. You are weary. Take care of yourself. Find a way to be creative - whether it’s gardening or knitting or painting. Step back. If you can afford it, take a class in something that interests you, it will restore your inner energy.

Report from the Left-Leaning Mob II: I just met with a third year undergraduate student. She volunteered that she and her family, solid Republicans from Arizona who love McCain, would be voting Dem for the first time in their lives. She said they hate what Trump is doing to their party. I just listened and thanked her for sharing.

Tactics like that work if people fall for them. The GOP has always been “on cue” with their talking points. “take your guns away” and “the war against Christmas” are examples of manufactured bullshit that every GOP’er practiced until perfect. If you haven’t figured that out by now you deserve to have them in charge of you. Dark money works if you let it buy you. Most of the trailer park crowd are willing to let it do that. Attack Ads work if you pay attention them and don’t question them. It seems the aggrieved white working dip shits are all ears. And Democrats will lose if they don’t fight this shit hard enough to win. Bitching about it just feeds it.

- as long as the republicans remain totally subservient to Trump, this will not change - if there is one thing that has become very clear - it is that Trump is untrustworthy - does not keep any promises that prove slightly inconvenient - and will do what ever his impulses suggest to him
