Discussion: Republicans Plan To Gamble On Obamacare Repeal Vote Friday

Is there a reason that lately - not just on TPM, but more generally in the media - the articles and reports about the difficulties and delays with the current Republican “repeal and replace” vote do not mention the 50 times that Republicans had no trouble at all voting to repeal the ACA? You know, when they would not have to face the consequences. People in this country, as distracted by other things as they are, need these kinds of reminders to put things - and the effects on their lives - in context.

According to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), some of previous no votes switched to yes in the conference, but when asked if they would have a unified caucus Friday he said, “I sure hope so. Or we will have the opportunity to watch a unified Democratic caucus impeach Donald Trump in two years in the majority.”

From their lying, traitorous, GOP lips to G-d’s ears…

Witness the CEO as President. ‘Screw it. If we can’t do this deal, we walk away. There will be other deals.’

Hell, if the GOP House members keep pulling nonsense like Nunes did yesterday and they end up in jail before their terms end, we could find that happening sooner.

What is happening with that Georgia race that replaces a GOP’er that joined the Trump team?

At this moment, I anticipate this bill will pass tomorrow. The Republican Party has shown itself to be very good at cowering down to Trump. Based on this ultimatum, they will vote yes as they fear HIM and his supporters more than their bases at home.
We on the left are often fooled by the posturing of the irresponsible Republican Party and then are shocked when they continue to behave in the manner in which they have become so adept in the last 8 yrs.
These people have no concept of governance that doesn’t insure their continued re election. Former president Obama said it well when he acknowledged that one of the things he learned through his presidency, was that members of congress (and politicians in general), cared more about getting re elected than doing the right thing.

They don’t know the effect of repealing essential health benefits? People (their constituents) will die.

Heartless, morally bankrupt, ideologically corrupt bastards.

Very good point. This is something NO ONE is mentioning because it doesn’t serve the narrative of chaos or creating suspense in the public.
God I hate the irresponsible media today. They ALL have an agenda; even those who lean left.

All in! (and you know how those Trump Casino deals worked out so well for everybody)

While I would love for this bill to fail, I’m guessing it’ll pass. The Repubs will knuckle under out of fear of Trump.

The thing is, passing this bill may make it less likely they get re elected. The Q poll released This morning showed just 17% approval for this disaster and 46% said they would be less likely to reelect their congress person if it passed. They really have no good options at this point. I guess their best option is that they pass it tomorrow and hope it dies in the Senate, where they are much less likely to be intimidated by Trump. They’ve truly hoisted themselves on their own petard. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch of assholes.

Ryan is a joke. This what you replace it with. Take insurance away from more people, save people little and allow insurers to create a system that punishes those that need insurance the most. What part of this is good?

At best it artificially lowers premiums, but does so by being detached from reality and actually providing coverage

I don’t remember who it was, but one of the MSNBC folks (Kornacky, maybe?) nailed a Freedom Caucus member on this earlier today. Basically, when Mr. Freedom Caucus explained why he couldn’t support the bill, Mr. MSNBC said, but you voted for all the previous bills. What’s the problem, is it because you knew those were just political grandstanding that didn’t matter? Mr. Freedom Caucus did his best, ‘well, it’s completely different…’ vamping, but really had no answer.

The Repubs are screwed no matter what happens–whether this bill dies in the House (shows they are powerless and incompetent), it passes the House and dies in the Senate (puts House members some of whom are vulnerable, on record voting for a bill with 17% approval rating), or somehow becomes law (they will own the consequences, which will be very real and very bad). There is no good political outcome for them.

Still there is a problem for the rest of us, which is that while we will be left with Obamacare if they fail to pass their bill, they have already killed the mandate. I don’t see how this doesn’t destroy our healthcare system (which is what they want)

They will pass it. The “binary” choice will reveal them all as partisans before their principals and certainly before country. I predict it will pass the Senate as well.

Real people will be harmed in very real ways. But they don’t care.

If I had to bet, I’d bet that the bill passes the House tomorrow. But I’m glad I don’t have to bet.

I’m really looking forward to Trump’s Saturday tweets if this goes down tomorrow.
Well, on the other hand, he might bomb North Korea, or maybe Germany.
