The 2018 campaign strategy for the Trump GOP is to run on pure unfiltered racism and nativism. Of course they donā€™t really want any reasonable deal that may discourage their base of deplorables from voting.

That would be the Soprano family.

So, if I remember correctly, this is the discharge petition that would allow a bunch of bills to reach the floor, including one that wants to throw out DACA kids and build the wall?

Prop 187 worked out really well for the GOP in CA. They basically lost a generation of voters. Now the GOP has fewer registered voters than independents in CA. They really really canā€™t help themselves. They have to keep going back to that poisoned well hoping that this time, just maybe, the water wonā€™t taste like shit.

Fun fact: the actual language of the House Rule governing discharge petitions says ā€œa majority of the total members of the Houseā€¦ā€

Just now, there are six vacancies, so the total is 429. A majority of THAT, is 215.

Exactly. But the fear among leadership is that the ā€œliberalā€ bill would pass, thus pissing off the base.
