Discussion: Republicans Filibuster Constitutional Fix To Overturn Citizens United

Discussion for article #227579

When you show me pictures of McConnell, I feel violent impulses bubble up.

A stark difference in political belief:

Democrats believe “one person = one vote”.
Republicans believe “one dollar = one vote”.

Fairly straightforward, really.

Great! Now all the Democrats need to do is remind the American public, on a daily basis, that the Republicans blocked attempts to keep corporations from buying running the country.

It would work, too, if the Democrats weren’t so damned inept.

Surprise, surprise, surprise! NOT!! Time to end the filibuster for ALL votes!

They are desperate to defend the major source of their party’s campaign cash: John-Bircher-Billionaires.

Well, this IS a constitutional amendment. It would need to get 60 (or is it 66?) anyway.

Senate GOP votes to put a for sale sign on the Capitol lawn. Bidding starts immediately.

Good catch. They won’t even let it come to a vote.

“here it was even likelier to fail because it needed a two-thirds majority to advance”

Pretty gratuitous except that the average person doesn’t know about the filibuster & now we can here how it lost “in the Senate” as if it did not get a majority vote.

I’m not that gung ho about amending the Constitution like this – see, e.g., election law expert and “voting fraud is bogus” author Rick Hasen – but this is pretty outrageous.

Money isn’t speech. Money is decibels. Louder speech renders quieter speech inaudible.

Money in politics denies the non-rich their First Amendment rights.

Well McConnell, since no real democracy wanting American likes what you have unleashed on the American political process, yes we do want the Congress to fix this. You however want to continue it because you don’t care about the American people or real democracy. You just want to steal elections and stifle our free speech.

I gotta say that this amendment is as much of a stunt as the 44 attempts to repeal Obamacare. I would be more impressed if the D’s were doing something to make sure they can even take votes like this come January. This will not get them one more vote than they already have, and they will never get 35 state legislatures to pass it either.

In the 70’s the R’s stopped proposing their dream legislation and worked on solidifying their majorities. I wish the D’s would do that instead of engaging in these futile exercises in wishful thinking that do nothing to move the needle.

Phew, that was a lot of work to do.
Now on to the next vacation after we do some post office naming.

Told you they’d do that.

Senator Franken was on the other night saying the same thing and its his bill. As I recall, he thought Republicans agreed to discuss it just so they could (no surprise) not deal with other things.
Which makes McConnell seem like an even bigger tool for saying the opposite.

The ACLU didn’t quite see this amendment as a victory for free speech or liberty. Could it have been because it would have given Congress the power to regulate any speech it didn’t approve of that might have some relation to an election? Nothing says good government like giving incumbents more authority to protect their position. The spin on this is just sad.

Of course they did, because buying elections (and voter suppression) are how these fuckheads get or keep getting elected.
