Discussion: Republican Candidates Criticize Former President Jimmy Carter

This is their problem with him… By coparison, President Carter exposes their phony religiosity.

Christie and Cruz are very vile energies. I wouldn’t refer to them as human, as they have proven they are not the same species as you and I. These two occupy some very dark, negative space.

To add to what @AJM said, by that point, we can’t even be certain that Reagan was in possession of all of his marbles. According to his son, Ronny, his father was already showing signs of Alzheimer’s by that point. Honestly, most of the Reagan Administration should have been facing treason charges. And AJM is right about the fact that our barracks was destroyed and Reagan did nothing about it, really.

Very true. He makes them all look like the fake Christians they really are.

They would do the same if Christ himself were here. President Jimmy Carter has always emulated the kind, understanding and loving Jesus Christ I was taught about when I was a child. Cruz and Christie are so very anti-Christ–they are vile creatures.

Some people are just trash. And for the GOP, evidently, it’s a thing to admire, not scorn. Shaking my head.

All part and parcel of that “Kinder & Gentler Compassionate Conservatism” we hear so much about, huh?
Many of the greatest examples of their caring and love for their fellow man was shown in the wake of hurricane Katrina in 2005, not only by Barbara Bush and her odious ilk, but also perhaps best by Republican Rep. Richard Baker:

So their attacks on cancer stricken President Carter, a good and caring honorable man, is to be expected and should come as no surprise.

Usually. Not always.

I have the utmost respect for Carter, particularly over the last thirty years. But Carter’s decision to support the murderous right-wing government of El Salvador in 1980 will forever be a bloody stain on his legacy:

So important did defeating the FMLN appear to be that the Carter Administration justified its military aid by announcing that the regime had made “progress” in the area of human rights, even though the Administration knew that in fact progress was nonexistent. In the year leading up to Carter’s decision the Salvadoran armed forces and the right-wing death squads linked to them had killed more than 8,000 noncombatant civilians – among them four U.S. churchwomen.
Dirty Hands - The Atlantic

He didn’t do so well in Haiti, either:

In the end, Carter is a great man, but he is a man — and he made some tragic, dreadful errors while in the Oval Office.

I suspect that Carter would be the very first to demand an unflinching accounting of his time in public service. It is his honesty, and his drive to always do better, that I most admire about Carter’s life. His fight to eradicate guinea worm alone is a towering achievement.

Cruz + Christie: Kings of the Pig People!!

True strength includes a hefty dose of wisdom. Obama has been one of the strongest presidents in the last half century, hands down. Cruz and Christie are not-very-well-disguised fascists.

On the other hand, I met an Historian who stated that he was alive today thanks to Carter. The man was from Argentina and Carter did a lot to prevent the slaughter of innocent people in that nation prior during and after the coup that took over there.

Carter made some mistakes as President, but a lot of what he’s done since has been great.

We are all flawed, and even someone like Carter is flawed, but I’ve always believed that one should be flawed while trying to do right rather than just being pretty much someone who takes from and hates others.

I wouldn’t refer to them as human…

Dehumanizing and othering is the first play in the fascist’s game. Don’t play that game.

They are very much human — and indeed it is precisely their human capabilities and frailties that make these men dangerous.

Well said, richardnixonhuberthumphrey. Well said. And, yes, I can agree with you about Carter’s failings as well. Though I am not a Christian–or a religious person–I do try to learn from this very humble man, Jimmy Carter. Thank you.

Yes, I do know that. St. Ronnie was a worthless pos but at least he knew he had to work with the dems.

It is so decent of these Christian candidates to be supportive of President Carter at this time!?! NOT!

President Carter was a better president than either of these slimeballs will ever be! He is also someone who could give these to jerks a few lessons in things like Christian charity, honesty, humility, forgiveness, tolerance, acceptance, and peace. That they would choose this moment to go after him and his policies, many of which would have helped this country in the long-term far better than anything they have proposed, show just what miserable human beings they actually are.

My prayers go out to President Carter and his family at this time. As a cancer survivor, I know he is in good hands, no matter what the outcome, which is something I know he strongly believes. And something neither of these candidates could even begin to understand.

Could not agree more but in the end, I do believe they will take their party down again

I agree.

It’s not really possible to blame or credit Carter for the consequences of a coup initiated 10 months before he took office.

At this point, the GOP deserves to falter and splinter. They have allowed themselves to wholly be taken over by extreme religionists who are just as exceedingly greedy as they are vile. Up until this year, I’d always hoped somehow that their better angels would take over. I no longer wish them well (as a political party). Our system has always worked its best when we have at least two healthy, robust parties with solid, positive mission statements. The GOP turned to the dark side forever back in 1980.

The GOP turned to the dark side forever back in 1980.

1968, not 1980. Nixon, not Reagan. It was the Nixon-Atwater evisceration of any moral core that the GOP might once have had that laid the groundwork for Reagan’s ascent.

The GOP had a really great opportunity to change course after Nixon – and they didn’t. That is why I said 1980, since they seem to have shown their hand at that time – that they didn’t have the desire to better themselves or the nation. I won’t argue the point too hard because there is solid argument for 1968.
