Definitely a gesture intended to engender a sense of camaraderie with your running mate.
I’m sure this is accurate, but who else was there? Gingrich and Christie may be playing the role of lickspittle when in Trump’s presence, but they’re widely viewed as objects of ridicule. Trump doesn’t seem to read much, but he reads the tabloids, and they both make regular appearances. Other experienced politicians couldn’t run away fast enough. Trump’s only hope for a mind-blowing, game-changing VP pick was to go totally off the reservation and pick someone from outside politics… but then he’d be abandoning the one quality he’s consistently said he wants in a VP – political experience.
Trump was in a tight little corner, and he put himself there.
But hey, let’s give this unstable asshole the nuclear launch codes. What could go wrong?

Seems like there is serious disagreement – if not open warfare! – within the Trump camp for this to have leaked. It’s like high school cliques trying to spread rumors about each other. Amazing!
