I suppose we’re used to the way Trump does things continually that turn out to be stupid. But this is like insisting to the butcher that you must have USDA-inspected certified prime stupid with that blue-ink stamp on it. It’s like a big blinking neon sign that says “This Is Stupid” on it. It’s inexplicably, bafflingly, confoundingly stupid. And yet I’ll bet a modest amount that the whole idea is to get attention, and stupid be damned, because this man is a demented 4-year-old who must have attention at all times. Also he’s stupid also too.

And at that, a lot of actual professionals have turned the Trump campaign down. Don’t want that slime on their résumé, and I don’t blame 'em. But surely there’s someone out there who’s managed a couple of campaigns and wasn’t involved in a scandal that’s crippled one Presidential bid and looks likely to not much help another. This is what happens when you have no connection to the political establishment and don’t trust anyone outside your personal circle. Everyone Trump has hired for anything has been either family, someone he knows personally, or someone recommended by a close associate. So when he finally realized (or was convinced) that he needed someone to run a ground game for his campaign, he didn’t have a large pool of candidates. Stepien may quite literally have been the best he could come up with.
