This does NOT indicate the Mueller needs another 6 months to wrap up his investigation. Sounds like the grand jury’s term was going to expire by the end of this month, so as stated, a six-month extension would be normal.
To the extent it means anything at all, it means Mueller probably won’t make some grand, sweeping final report within, like, the next week.
Many sources are reporting that this comes as a complete and utter shock to one Rudy Giuliani, and nobody else on the planet.

While that’s true as far as it goes, it is still highly suggestive that more indictments are on the way…or at least on the table. You don’t need the grand jury if you don’t want indictments.
At least this will give Fox something to complain about other than the Trump shutdown and AOC dancing.

But it also suggests that Mueller wants to be able to use the SAME grand jury. So there is someone or someones who he needs a grand jury who heard all of the earlier testimony, to be able to address.
He has some loose ends, Corsi, someone who just took a subpeona to the US supreme court, and a few others who are currently resisting him. Whatever move he is going to make, he wants the option of using the - now fully informed and onboard - grand jury, rather than having to come up with a new one who would have to start from scratch.
This also suggests that there are likely to be more indictments coming,not just a “report”
