Discussion: Reports: Former Dem Iowa Lt. Gov. Patty Judge To Challenge Grassley

Her name is “Judge”?

BWAHAHAHAHAHAAHA!!! It’s like reality (and Obama) are conspiring to give us the giggles!

I know it goes against conventional wisdom, but I asked one of my GOP lobbyist clients if there was a chance that the house could come back into play. He said that if Hillary’s margins start getting up to 10+ points, everything’s on the table because that means R’s have either stayed home or switched over to vote. Staying home is even worse for them because that means they can’t even split tickets. I don’t want to get ahead of the task at hand, but I’ll be looking at generic congressional numbers really close starting in September.

Oh, now that’s a really smart point. I hadn’t even thought of the fact that Republicans who stay home will be essentially conceding those down ballot races to the Democrat. Even if it’s just 5% that sit out the general, between that and the uptick Democrats typically see in presidential election years this could be a very big year for Democrats.

If they can get the GOP spending massive amounts of money to save Grassley here, it’s a big win for Democrats

Living in Iowa, this is not good news. If there’s anyone in the state who Iowa Democrats dislike more than Chuck Grassley, it’s Patty Judge. She’s way too cozy with corporate interests in the state and has about as much charisma as a mailbox. She was an uninspiring Lt. Governor and since she (and Gov. Chet Culver) got drubbed in 2010, no one has missed her on the political scene. Iowa Dems made the mistake of clearing the field for Bruce Braley in 2014… and people liked him. If they do the same here, they’re incompetent. Grassley is feeling the heat right now and is vulnerable for the first time in decades. But if I’m him, I’m thinking this is a very good day.

Planting the seed of doubt in an Iowa-nice way. Grassley is very popular there.

Is Patty Judge a knight or a bishop?

Here’re some opinions from Iowans on Patty Judge, with a few alternative names mentioned

As a dem Iowian in general I agree. I would not be quite as harsh on
patty judge but I think she will lose to Grassley. Iowa has traditionally split their Senators between D and R. Braily ran a political mel practice campaign and now we are burdened with two R’s and neither in the mainstream of thought. In my oppinion two of the three candidates already announced to run against Grassley can win. Let’s not make the same mistake made when Roxanne ran against him last time or when we tried tp hold Harkin’s seat.

Interesting?
Strategy!

The Fifty State Strategy has to start somewhere.

There was a time when I saw Grassley as a principled “loyal opposition” member, He seemed to have some ethics and be interested in actually governing, though I disagreed with his conservatism. He wasn’t a “winger”, an extremist. Not any more though, not for several years. I’ve quite lost respect for him.

Good, he hasn’t had a real challenger in decades.

Thanks. Good stuff.

Sounds like Hogg’s a legit candidate and a bit more progressive, but like Judge has better name recognition and will have more money.

But denisj, isn’t there a pretty big difference in the Iowa electorate between presidential years and non-pres years (i.e. red in 2010 & 2014 plus blue in 2008 & 2012 = purple)?

Remember, Iowa was also represented by Tom Harkin for 30 years, one of the most liberal in the Senate.
