O look, the Klan’s figured out how the telephone works!
What kind of vile little f&ckwad phones in a bomb-threat at a time like this? Answer: the racist South Carolinian type.
I sure am glad that the shooter was just an isolated case from which we can draw no larger conclusions.
Yep. It is so good to know we live in a post-racial America…
Racist terrorism rears its ugly head again…
So, not an isolated event?
Just silly childish bomb-threats along with well-meaning racist jokes. The SCOTUS has declared the South has moved on from its history of racism.
It appears that the home-grown terrorists are learning well the lessons of terrorists abroad courtesy of Dick’n’Dub’s misbegotten wars recruitment efforts.
Very poignant piece in the New Yorker:
For those who know the institution and its history, what happened on Wednesday evening conjures a particularly bitter irony. The African Methodist Episcopal Church, founded in 1793, is the oldest denomination established by black people in the United States. It owes its origins to white discrimination against black Christians in the eighteenth century, and an incident in which black churchgoers were interrupted while worshipping and directed to the segregated section of an Episcopal church in Philadelphia. For black Christians, the word “sanctuary” had a second set of implications. The spiritual aims of worship were paired with the distinctly secular necessity of a place in which not just common faith but common humanity could be taken for granted. No matter the coming details about the shooting in Charleston, it seems almost inescapable that the assault on a single black church is an inadvertent affirmation of the need for an entire denomination of them.
When the press was reporting a bomb threat at the Marriott next door to the AME church almost simultaneous to the shooting my first thought was “conspiracy.” It took awhile to figure out they were talking about the potential threat of a bomb being left at the scene.
Where is that Federal report on the potential for terrorism from right-wing groups?
Killed by reality-phobia, like so much else.
Thanks for that link. It is the photo in the piece that is so affecting.
It makes my heart ache, but not as much as my head when I realize how some others view it.
What is the matter with people? How small-minded, hateful and deeply flawed they are.
I should add egged on by others just as deeply flawed and even more evil because they know exactly what they’re doing.
Redstate.com has already erupted in a frenzy of morons screaming that this is all a “False-Flag Attack to justify Taking Away OUR GUNS!!!” and a smaller group claiming it will be used as justification for rounding up Christian White Men to send to the FEMA GAY re-education camps.
sigh…
After hearing that the shooter purposely left one survivor to tell the story, I got the eerie feeling that I was reading “The Turner Diaries” again. Here is a prediction- the FBI will find a copy among the shooter’s personal effects; either a print version or on his computer.
“The Turner Diaries” was written by an American Neo-Nazi (1) and reads like a how-to manual for white separatist militias. It is in the public domain, but is banned in Canada and some European countries as hate literature.
Warning: if you decide to read it (2) you will need to cleanse, disinfect and exorcise your tablet immediately afterwards…
Yes, because to conclude otherwise would just be racist!
“They” drove that poor white boy over the edge with their rapin’ and over-takin’!
I have been telling people for year about that book. All the RWAC mass killers have the book-except maybe for those white boys who blew up the Boston Marathon.
Now might be a propitious time for the DOJ to nudge SCOTUS to re-examine its VRA reasoning.
