Discussion: Reports: African-American Found Hanged In Southern Mississippi

Discussion for article #234503

I was going to say “let’s not rush to judgement here as it is possible that this could be a suicide” until I caught that he’d been missing for almost a month. . .so now I want to know if there are any suspects.

I hope the law doesn’t botch the investigation the way they did in the case of Lennon Lacy.

Very sad either way. As you probably know, police won’t give details because if not a suicide they do not want to disclose evidence of which only the killer(s) would be aware.

The Supreme Court has ruled that our society is now post-racial, so I’m sure there’s nothing malicious involved.

His name is Otis Byrd.

Apparently the FBI are investigating, which says a lot to me.

I understand how it could depend on the size of the “woods,” but a month sounds like a rather long time to find a missing person who is on a property adjacent to their place of residence.

Let’s see: black, Mississippi, my money is on a lynching.

Right. Police must suspect a hate crime.

Just a friendly accident while trying to put up a tire swing…

So…I guess he wasn’t signed by SAE?

If this turns out to be what I am afraid it is (a hate crime) it puts the recent event at the OK Fraternity into sharp focus. Words hurt and lead to actions. We are no where near the end of racism in America.

I am appalled.

Thank you. Still timely after all these years.

CNN’s justice correspondent Evan Perez reported on Thursday that the man was “found hanging from a tree in some woods in property behind the residence where he was living.”

“They found him this morning about 10 this morning,” Perez said on “The Lead with Jake Tapper.” “They were looking for him because he had been missing since early this month.”

Does not sound like they were looking at all.

Well, two things. One is that we don’t know how large the property is, or how large the woods are. But the second thing is that we don’t know how long the authorities had been looking. Generally speaking nobody is going to look for adults until they’ve been missing for quite some time.
My guess is that they didn’t start looking until very recently.

Shades of 1965…

Um, yes, that does seem a bit problematic.

Of course, I don’t know what the woods are like–maybe they’re pretty much impassible, so no one thought to look.

But still…

Also, I’m pretty sure there’s no Claiborne, MS. There’s Claiborne County, and Port Gibson is a town in that county.
