Discussion: Report: Utah Senator Orrin Hatch Plans To Retire, Clearing Path For Mitt Romney

I don’t know, guys, we live in some strange ass times, and right now Mitt Romney doesn’t sound too bad. It would be great if Evan McMullin decided to throw his hat in the ring, but short of that, I’ll take Romney. It’s not like we’re going to get a Democrat out of Utah, although we should fight like hell like we’ve got a damn good shot. At least Romney would be less crazy than anything else we’re likely to get and he would annoy the piss out of PP. But most of all, he’d be a vote to impeach.

Plus, he could tout Romneycare in place of Obamacare.

The dream is always the same:

Sarah Huckabee and Kellyanne Conway arrive for the White House briefing in a pantomime horse suit.

They introduce Steve Bannon, who begins beer-belching The Horst Wessel Song.

While juggling infant Syrian refugees at the podium.

Suddenly, the screen cuts to Trump in the Oval Office, under a huge portrait of Vladimir Putin.

He announces that he’s just signed an arrest warrant for Sec. Clinton – on treason charges.

The camera zooms out to show Lincoln next to him, tied to a chair, terrified, with duct tape over his mouth.

Julian Assange dances around him, a bloody knife in one hand, Abe’s severed ear in the other.

As Steeler’s Wheel sings, “Stuck in the Middle With You.”

Then the screen cuts to Rex Tillerson, à la Slim Pickens, astride a warhead.

The bomb-bay doors open, and he drops – wildly waving his cowboy hat – over North Korea.

The last thing I hear is, “Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaw!”

Then – mercifully – I wake, screaming, in a cold sweat…

Tell myself it’s only a dream…

And mix another pitcher of Kamikazes for breakfast.

If Hatch does retire this could turn into quite a free for all. There will be a Bannonite candidate, whether Hatch runs or not, Mitt Romney appears ready to run, Evan McMullin who garnered 21% of the vote as a third party candidate in Utah would be viable, and will Jon Huntsman get back in the game? if there was a three way race in the General even a Democrat could win if Trump is still in Office in Nov. 2018.

Somebody is bound to be horribly humiliated in this matchup, and no matter who it is, it’s a win for the American people.

While I fully support the dinosaurs retiring, please not Mitt. I would prefer 6 more years of Hatch then having to see Mitt on TV. The only hope is the Utah GOP nominates via convention and not a primary. Please Utah GOP nominate anyone but Mitt.

Aren’t they both vulnerable to attacks from right-wing crazies?

I would hope for McMullin but I guess we will see. The important news is that another GOP Senator is getting out. Not boding well for the Republicans.

Romney has been fiercely critical of Trump

Sure, during the primary. But has he been since the election and after Trump dangled the Secretary of State job in front of him and got Mittens to sit up and beg like an idiot?

I think you need to look up the definition of ‘fierce.’

Exactly–he will support Trump but not say all the evil stuff that most GOPers say. But he’ll vote to roll back abortion, ban immigrants, cut health care, cut schools, spread foreign policy debacles…so why is this “better”?

hmm interesting… On another note, I recall seeing a quote from Chuck Schumer (at Politico I think) where he said contrary to popular opinion he believes Democrats do have a shot at taking back the Senate next year thanks to the party’s red and purple state incumbents performing well and democrats going on offense in growing number of surprising states. Among the states where Schumer said he felt democrats had a chance at a surprising victory was Utah. I had seen the other states he listed mentioned by others commentators but have had never heard anyone say Utah could be competative. Schumer even went so far as to emphasize we should all watch Utah, that the state could surprise us. To me it seemed like he was implying he was seeing some sort of favorable data coming out of the state. Does anyone know anything about this? Do dems have a good potential candidate for the state? has there been any polling? Or are Schumers positive thoughts on the state just coming from the fact that the state, with its large Mormon population, has long disapproved of Trump and the expected generally good enviroment and high turnout for democrats across the country next year given Trumps unpopularity and his multiplying scandals.

don’t hold your breath. The weasel ran screaming from Romneycare when he ran for prez. Which is fine because he never deserved the credit for it in the first place.

Looking at a couple of Salt Lake Tribune polls, I do not see where all this Dem optimism is.
I even would like a citation on the TPM story, “in a state where even most Republicans don’t like the president.”

Huh? Oct 2017 poll shows 72% of Utah Republicans approve of Trump, 52% overall.

Its a bloody red state.

OK, so it won’t be your first pitcher of Kamikazes. But, is it merely your second? Or, are you working on your third or fourth?

Kind Hearts. . . ends with the schemer preparing to spend the rest of life in prison. An R from Utah doing the same would work for me.
