Discussion for article #228946

Seriously? You’re going to let Joni take your seat, Tom?

(German speakers will get this.)

What happens to the money after Harkin retires ?

I dunno. Probably Harkin will fuck himself in the ass with it.

Did you read the article? He’s giving the money as a charitable gift to a program in his name to Drake University in Des Moines, but not to his alma mater which also has a program in his name, due to concerns over ethics. Sad though. He could lend Braley a little scratch with the race this close. Disappointed.

Great. Once again the Dems get out the circular firing squad so that this asshole can get a program named after him at some podunk school studying the “art” of politics, because that’s just what we need in the U.S., another fucking school studying politics. Here’s some real-life politics, Tom, try to save that seat for the Democrats.

Good time to recall that Sen. Harkin is an anti-vaccer and a promoter of unsafe ‘herbal’ remedies–some of which have killed people.

Wow ! – Getting your name on a building has sure gotten expensive !

One thing’s for sure…if Ernst wins he’s shot his legacy to hell by being such a tightwad and by not helping out a fellow Democrat in a time of need for his own beloved state’s future. This is a critical time in this country, where holding onto the Senate is still altogether in the realm of possibility. Kind of a selfish, dickish move imo.

Wow, losing to Ernst is tremendously embarrassing

I don’t believe any of the so-called “facts” that appears in this article. Look at the tenor of these claims:

“Reid has reportedly reached out to Harkin at least twice. First in April in a face-to-face with the senator from Iowa and then late last summer when he was with Harkin and DSCC Chairman Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO). Both times Harkin refused.”

Does that strike you as a reliable fact? No confirmation from Reid, no quotes from Bennet. Frankly, this reads like innuendo. The claim about Harkin’s plan to switch the location of his papers from Iowa State to Drake is also unsubstantiated, unless you subscribe to the Wall Street Journal. I don’t, and I am suspicious of any corroboration that requires an act of loyalty to see, perhaps even agreeing to a payment (I’m not sure about that because I refuse to jump through hoops for the Wall Street Journal.). Ultimately, this entire article requires deeper substantiation before any of it feels genuine.

Sooner or later, it’s pretty much up to voters to gather that Reaganomics is a scam for the rich.

Exactly. Way too many people posting on this thread are jumping on the bash Harkin bandwagon without actually attempting to verify the veracity of what this article contains.

Think about the timing of this leak. It comes right after Ernst made her stupid “everyone depends on government” remark. That remark must’ve dealt Ernst a huge blow, so Republicans have to look for some way to shift momentum back to her, and voila! This pops up, and the right knows that few will actually think to verify the veracity of the information. Just look at the number of posts here bashing Harkin and saying “the Democrats don’t know how to win,” essentially panicking as if all is lost. We are our own worst enemies.

And lazy TPM is complicit by running the story which helps the GOP. No fact-checking at all. Just regurgitate whatever the GOPers tell them. TPM has really declined sharply over the past several years. Poor reporting, little fact checking, reporters like Sahil who can’t wait to write a GOP spin story against the Democrats or the President. And apparently no one over-seeing what the reporters write.

It’s not like he actually went out a earned the money, what a jerk! Everyone that donated even a penny should request it back!

On second thought, I think you might be right. I didn’t think I had to click the link to see that the original story in Politico is far different than the one posted here. In fact Harkin has given Braley $10,000 and has helped to raise $100,000 for Democrats in his state over the past year. Plus, he’s maxed out to Braley in direct giving. The article at Politico goes on to question why he doesn’t use his own leftover campaign money to transfer to Braley by way of the DSCC. The article at Politico also goes on to presume this has created a riff with other Democrats leading them to be “irked”, but as usual doesn’t name names or give sources. Personally, articles like this are meant to foment division and anxiety in the party, often times where there is none or the original sentiment was mixed or a mild response. Suddenly then, it becomes a hair-on-fire moment for the party or the candidate…I mean, Harry Reid asked twice, didn’t he? Not once, but TWICE. Its more than possible I may have gotten this story wrong. In fact, that may have been the whole intent of the writer. BTW, Politico got their information from an unnamed Democratic aide it turns out.

Apparently, the story was updated this morning at Politico too, but they don’t bother to tell you what part of the article was updated. Don’t know if it was a typo they changed, or something bigger than that like a whole paragraph added with new facts. I hate that kind of shit.

Positioned between Fu*kin’ Liar and Batshitcrazee’, Kochroach & NRA puppet Ernst just yesterday reiterated her desire to replace the ACA with “…churches and charitable outreach.” and to scrap the IRS and “…just start over.”…AND tried to have it both ways on abortion, saying life begins at conception but there could be “exceptions” but wouldn’t say what.

My GAWWWWWWD’ Iowa…You’re better than this! You want to elect this screeching loon and brainsick harpy? Seriously???

Because that’s how they roll here. Quick to blame the dems without any fucking facts. And TPM loves to give misleading headlines
