Do yourselves a favor and go over to Juan Cole’s Informed Comment blog for his seven reasons the killer was not affiliated with ISIS but why he would pretend to be. Self hatred over sexual preference and being f-ed up because of religion are not mutually exclusive, and probably intimately related, in fact, but it’s clear which he was willing to admit.
I see a lot of comments about American hatred of gays. You want to see hated of gays you should travel abroad. Violence against any group is unacceptable and a long stretch in the slammer should mellow out that impulse. Treatment of Gays in the Lands of Allah is horrific … just wake up and accept it. This guy was in a society transitioning towards the acceptance of Gays but was from a culture that is savagely anti-gay. Hamas,killed an important commander … one of their elite … for being Gay … absorb that gem. If some idiot hiding out in Idaho fed on a steady diet of Fox news attempted to take the life of the President I might blame American racist attitudes … but I sure as heck would Blame Fox news. ISIS deserves the bad press it gets and more.

That’s right. What else is he going to say? “I’m a self-hating gay man and so I’m going to kill a bunch of LGBT people because homosexuality turns me on and these people have seduced me into sinful lust?” Perhaps he believed that if he tied it to Jihad, his own sins would be forgiven and he would get to heaven. I, too, think it was a lifetime of shame and guilt that drove him to murder.
