Discussion for article #227627
This makes no sense, or is sadly lacking details. One also has to question why a 3 time killer had freedom enough in prison to escape; he should be in his cell 23 hours a day.
Bin Laden determined to attack inside the U.S
It’s very frustrating to read an article about how the plot was discovered in advance but the escape still went forward, and there are NO MORE DETAILS. What’s up TPM?
My guess since Lane was still a kid when convicted and only killed students the prison didn’t feel he was a threat if left in regular security.
Maybe that’s all that was provided by the prison officials.
Surely they won’t admit to any kind of dereliction of duty.
I’m betting that this is one of those “privatized” prisons that are more
worried about making money than protecting citizens from murderers.
My guess is the other inmates talked Lane into this, but the rest of his life will be spent doing hard time, so there’s that.
You are right Sherron. ARAMARK Correctional Services owns and operates the facility. Here’s what they say about themselves on a food service employment posting.
"ARAMARK is a leader in professional services, providing award-winning food services, facilities management, and uniform and career apparel to health care institutions, universities and school districts, stadiums and arenas, parks and destinations and businesses around the world. The company is recognized as one of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” by the Ethisphere Institute, one of the “World’s Most Admired Companies” by FORTUNE magazine and one of America’s Largest Private Companies by both FORTUNE and Forbes magazines. ARAMARK seeks to responsibly address issues that matter to its clients, customers, employees and communities by focusing on employee advocacy, environmental stewardship, health and wellness, and community involvement. In other Aramark private prison News:
from www.dailykos.com/story/2014/09/12/1329208/-MI-GOV-SCANDAL-Snyder-admin-quietly-canceled-98K-fine-for-for-profit-prison-food-vendor-Aramark
…Aramark Correctional Services [is] the for-profit prison food vendor that supplies food services to prisons across Michigan. They’ve experienced repeated food shortages, employees bringing drugs and contraband to prisoners, employees having sex with prisoners, and most recently, maggots in multiple food preparation areas.
The state started cracking down on Aramark last March when they imposed at $98,000 fine for food shortages and unauthorized menu substitutions. Things didn’t get better, however, and, in August, they got hit with another fine, this one for $200,000.
However, after a FOIA request by Progress Michigan, we now learn that the original $98,000 fine was never imposed. It was, in fact, canceled with Snyder administration officials telling Aramark administrators that they had been “too harsh” on them.
They run the food services, not the entire prison.
The guards are unionized civil services employees. I doubt that a privatized, for profit company would hire them.
oh…sorry…but privitization is a Kasich ideal
So we can blame Kasich hires, like the new director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction is Gary Mohr, who served as the managing director for Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) from 2007 to 2009. Since 2009, he has been the CEO of Mohr Correctional Insight, a consulting company which has mostly worked with CCA. In addition, CCA recently hired Gov. Kasich’s former congressional chief of staff, Donald Thibaut, as a lobbyist. jfs.athensoh.org/documents/Privateprisons.pdfenter link description here
