Guns still arenât allowed on college campuses until August 2016 in Texas, and community colleges have until August 2017 to comply with the law. So, not quite yet.
Further clarification: concealed carry is allowed on campus only if the college says it is right now. The law is not enforced until August 2016, and to my knowledge, none of the campuses have jumped the gun on allowing it (so to speak). I did hear that Austin Community College will allow guns starting in January 2016, making them the first college in the state to allow them. But community colleges have until August 2017, and I have been told by people high up in my CC that they have no intention of changing the weapon policy until then.
The law hasnât taken effect just yet.
Texas gun ownership currently stands at 35.7%. That makes Texas only 17th in the nation in terms of gun ownership. Not even the upper third. Compare that to the national leader: Alaska at 61.7%. In the contiguous US the title goes to Idaho at 56.9%.

OK thenâŚHow about the NRA sending everyone in America a gun. And ammo. Lets us just see if what the NRA wants will reduce gun violence or not. (not!!)
Sort of a âput up or shut upâ challenge.
Of course my own personal reasoning tells me that if a gun isnât available to me then it makes it REALLY hard for me to shoot anyone.
I support universal and thorough background checks, a license to own a gun, gun safety classes and legal obligations attendant to gun ownership, and others. No felon should have access to a gunâŚnor should someone with certain mental issues. These things will not stop all gun violence but it will reduce it. Any reduction would be a good thing.
" The lock down was lifted at 2:30 p.m. and the school district report that âeveryone is safe.â "
Right. I thought this headline a misprint- That everyone was reported âsafeâ after the school received a report that one of the students was neither armed nor open carrying anything but some books and pens.
Great post. I would not have posted mine had I seen yours first.
Yes, and if those statistics were in anyway relevant to my comment, I might thank you for them. However, since theyâre a just another expression of your penchant for playing the role of Le Corrector (while ignoring the larger point altogether), I wonât bother.
You were just doing the stereotypical all Texans are crazy crap that sometimes finds it way to the surface among commenters here. In your very next post you said real news would be they found an unarmed Texan. But you know, those of us who are liberals in Texas get tired of crap like that. It is insulting and ignorant. There are more liberals in Texas than almost any other state other than California, but you in your tribalism feel the need to not only completely ignore us, but actively propagate the lie that we donât exist. Which in turn, makes it harder for us to recruit and unite down here. That is my problem with comments like yours. They needlessly insult the people who should be your natural allies. You want to stop the crazies that Texas sends to DC? Than embrace and embolden your liberal Texan allies. Maybe send some money our way so we can win a race or two.
Oh, and I will gladly embrace being known for correcting false and misleading information. If you have a problem with someone serving that role, that sounds like your problem, not mine. I for one, prefer that we trade in facts, not bigoted stereotypes.
Wow. You really swing hard when you miss, donât you. All of the people I know in Texas are liberals (most of them attended the Atheist convention in Austin back in 2013). The one person whom I care the most about in this world, is at this very moment relaxing in Dallas, Texas (I bet you didnât see that one coming). I almost moved to San Antonio a few years back. My suggestion is that you might want to re-calibrate your snark meter to be a little more discriminating when interpreting posts pertaining to matters of Texas and guns and try not to take it so personally, eh?
People take this âidentityâ stuff too seriously, including Yours Truly.
Weâre all Americans, no matter what state, and the Right (with the enabling MSM, FOX and Talk Radio), using its mules of geriatric, racist, fearful heavy-voters, is kicking our ass.
If people from 18-42 voted like the Old Folks, this discussion would be about the BEST kind of gun control.
And if this is not addressed, we may win the Presidency (which the kids come out for), but
Down Ticket (Congressional)
Gubernatorial
State Legislature and State Officials
Judgeships
We will be running uphill with this bullshit.
I conclude, notwithstanding the angst on our side, that THE AMERICAN PUBLIC is âdisturbedâ.
But not enough to take the trouble to vote.
This is not the Third World (where I have lived for a good part of my adult life). This is the United States.
Voting counts.
