Discussion: Report: More Than 70 GOPers Sign Letter Urging RNC To Cut Off Funds To Trump

Too little. Too late. It’s up to Democrats to save the nation.

They should totally get behind Evan McMullin.

Actually Time has a cover story saying Priebus threatened Trump with exactly that after the situation with Ryan et al. and that’s why he simmered down for a couple of days.

Unfortunately these aren’t 70 current officeholders—that would be too awesome—but the panic is setting in worse and worse. Look out below…

I’ll believe this letter when I see it. Yesterday outlets had the Secret Service jumping on Trump for his 2nd Amendment argle-bargle, which was later walked back. Let’s wait this one out for verification.

If it’s for-real, a copy will leak out soon. There can’t be a better way to leak a secret than to get 70 people to sign on to it.

Rinse would need to sprout a spine first. Not much chance of that based upon past performance.

Remember what Ben Franklin said - “70 people can keep a secret if 69 of them are dead.”

I oppose this initiative.

True. Then again many people say Donald Trump is a genius, yet somehow the evidence attesting to it remains a tightly controlled secret.

“Drowning with a Trump-emblazoned anchor around its neck.”

It’s all about branding.

Did it really get walked back though? My understanding was that the source said they’d had multiple conversations w. the campaign about the 2A comment, and the official response was that there had been no formal discussion with the candidate. That’s more of a clarification of semantics. But I might have missed something.

…with a Trump-emblazoned anchor around its neck.

Heh. An anchor tied around the neck of the GOP and around the neck of every politician who continues to endorse him.

An anchor they tied there themselves.

Their internal polling must be devastating! Gotta love it.

This tracks. There were already reports out today that Priebus is having discussions at the RNC on pulling their money and organization out of Trump’s campaign and redirecting it towards down ticket races.

Politco also included the draft of this letter in their report.

Plus…its sort of a “Well, duh!” moment. Its going to happen, the only issue is when. Trump is collapsing, and has no mechanism to turn things around…even if he did shut up, which he won’t. Meanwhile in all the Senate races, the GOP Senators are significantly outperforming Trump. They could probably have a good chance at saving a number of races. Only IL, WI, NH and IN are looking like they are out of reach. But things are tightening in AZ and FL…and the leads in OH are not secure. NC is going to receive a ton of out of state cash, so I wouldn’t consider that one safe if was them, and now Hillary seems to be focusing on IA as well, so they need to make Grassley safe.

Keep in mind that the GOP is in an unfamiliar position this year…they have the short end of the fund raising stick, both at the national committee level and the Presidential campaigns + super PACs.

If the Secret Service volunteers any contact with someone isn’t formal then it may as well have not happened at all. Either someone was questioned and interviewed or they weren’t. Providing the object of your curiosity or suspicion with plausible deniability doesn’t scream “This person might be in hot water!”
