As to Pence, “You whipped out that Mexican thing” is going to destroy him in whatever he plans to run for in the future. The entire party will be hung with it, so to start out with a negative approval rating and try to build from there, well, that’s the impossible dream.

I do not believe that Trump can be hurt with his Base. 1619-2016 racism is a great backdrop for racist candidates.
The difference in 2016 from, say 1976, is that, before, this campaign racism was confined to certain sectors of the country. And even then, it was more obliquely stated. It’s solidly in the mainstream now…made even more intractable by the simple fact that those Americans who tend to be the least racist are also the least engaged politically.
