“And the three of us beat him until he was unconscious.”
What a very polite way of saying that you kicked someone’s ass. I wonder if they were humming the Team America song while they did it.
Good for them. The guy has an automatic weapon and was about to waste dozens of people on the train. And your reaction is to criticize the people who subdued him? Really?
Yes, if a guy is heavily armed, you kick his ass, especially if you yourself don’t have any weapons, and the guy was looking to kill a bunch of people. Beat his ass for sure.
Wow.
It is pretty mind boggling. What an asshole you are, IHeartKasich .
Heroes are ordinary people who keep their heads and use their capabilities when they are cornered. These men were of the few who knew that a direct assault on the threat was needed and had the ability to make good on their intent.
There are thousands more potential and actual heroes who voluntarily serve our Nation. At this moment other National Guard troops are filling in on the most intense fire season in history to make up for a ratfuck Republican Congress that refused to fund, and then blocked an Obama attempt to properly fund the fire suppression budget this very summer. There are fires burning with no staffing because the resources are all on other fires. Thirteen people have been killed so far by these fires, and somehow it suits the Republicans to exploit the chaos of wildfire.
Be grateful for those who soldier in your service.
It’s not often that an alleged “progressive” here makes a comment as asinine and brainless as a typical Republican does, but you’ve managed that feat nicely. Congratulations.
First of all, the attacker was carving the people trying to subdue him with some sort of bladed weapon the whole time until he went unconscious. Second, if you have some sort of expertise in whatever ethical standards may be operative in hand-to-hand combat with a person pretty clearly intending to massacre civilians, let’s hear about it. In fact, if you know anything about physical conflict of any kind, that would be relevant too. Third, these guys risked their lives against an armed attacker and undoubtedly saved many lives in the process. And you have a problem because they’re American? That makes them mindless gung-ho brutes or something? You might as well take that stuff somewhere else because it won’t fly here, where it’s considered sort of OK to risk your life to save others, maybe even mildly laudable.
(Note to mods: indulging in some ad hom was very hard to avoid here. I’d like my brownie points noted for the record.)
The victims in this thing will be the innocent people who get screwed because they are lumped in with this a-hole.
The poster’s comment is a sign of how the mindless violence-loving repigs have ruined America’s reputation and standing in the world. Very few people in the world outside of America do not think of us as stupid thugs.
And your point is?
I’m surprised these rescuers didn’t execute the guy with his own weapon.
I think I read one account that said the the gunman’s gun jammed. If it had not maybe both the rescuers and many others would be dead now.
And my schoolboy French loves the “sangfroid”.
I read one study about people who do heroic things that concluded that heroes run TO the action instead of away from it.
Indeed, they keep their heads, try to think about what they can do, if anything. “Sangfroid” anyone?
My goodness – are you trying to be funny? You seem to mock that they are american soldiers — but is precisely their military training which propelled them to act when most civilians would automatically freeze, run away or cower. They saved innocent people from death and injury. These guys are genuine heroes that deserve gratitude and respect. Also, since you are a Prime member, I assume your Kasich handle is supposed to be ironic – but judging from the sneering quality of your post you just come off like a desperate troll.
I wonder if any of the self-described “patriots” who like to parade around in their camo would have had the same response. Of course it’s unlikely they’d own a passport but that’s another issue . . .
I like to think I’m cosmopolitan enough to know the rest of the world doesn’t necessarily admire everything American and Americans have ever done. The world did have a few comments to make during the Bush years, but attitudes toward the U.S. have greatly improved since then. And in this case the officials in Arras gave the Americans and the Brit involved medals, OK? And there were statements of gratitude from the French president and interior minister. So I really don’t see anything in that incident we need to writhe with embarrassment about.
Maybe not so much cornered as seeing an action is necessary. Whatever it was they were not going to let some chump take them out for free. I hope someone (CIC?) offers them commissions as the leaders they have shown themselves to be.
One in particular that comes to mind would have just Nuged his pants. Again.
When I was stationed in Korea many decades ago, some American soldier dove into the icy Han river to rescue a Korean kid. The soldier was wearing winter clothes.
The commanding gave the guy a stripe.
You missed the point entirely.
Ah, it is a bit funny (now that there was no tragedy) to look at it from the point of view of the would be gunman.
Here he is, all armed up and ready to go. Kalashnikov, handgun and knife. A location where no one can run away. Carefully staked out, no doubt (perhaps several previous journeys?) The element of surprise. Hoping to kill as many elderly, defenseless, surprised travellers as possible. What could possibly go wrong?
And then he finds himself in a Leslie Nielsen movie. The automatic gun does not work. Nobody dies. And instead of terrified civilians the first people he runs into are trained soldiers (Americans, no less, straight from the Great Satan). Instead of being scared they run toward him. Instead of wreaking havoc on others, it rains down fists and kicks on himself. This is not the way it was supposed to be according to the terrorist’s training manual. The “poor” guy must have felt that Allah had a day off or else was siding with the infidels again (as he does so often in real life).
He’ll have plenty of years to contemplate the humor in his utter and complete failure.
Well, I think I got everyone’s point just fine. I just didn’t entirely agree. If you think that means ipso facto that I’m missing your point then I’m afraid we’re at an impasse. : )
