Discussion for article #232703
If he gets the nomination, he’ll be over 75 going into Election Day 2016. Seventy. Five.
I like this guy a lot. He’s well liked in OH and could definitely unseat Portman.
Asses in seats, my friend, asses in seats.
Hmmmm…Let’s get it done.
Strickland could give Portman a run for his money.
Does that make him the presumptive favorite? Will others run for the D nomination. I know little about current OH politics, but there should be a big bench of D’s shouldn’t there? Anyone know about Tim Ryan?
Yeah, he’s a bit of a late bloomer on the federal stage but Harry Reid, Patrick Leahy, Barbara Boxer, and Bernie Sanders are all in that age vicinity and are sharp as heck!
Plucky, I really like him too.
Strickland was good in statewide races but in a Federal race the out of state attack ad makers would make mincemeat of him. Sittenfeld being the rare D behind enemy lines (south of I-70) could take down Rob if he could raise the funds.
Looks pretty fit physically and is mentally sharp. Bet he lasts longer on this earth than Chris Christie.
But they’re not running for their first term. That said, I really like him as well; if Ohioans would be willing to elect him (and 75 isn’t 85, after all, and we’re not talking about the presidency), he’d be a great addition to the Warren-Brown-Whitehouse-etc. Fighting Dems caucus. Anybody know how he’s polling in Ohio these days?
Ryan’s conversion comes as he is mulling a potential Senate bid against Ohio GOP Sen. Rob Portman next year. “We’re certainly looking very closely at it,” Ryan told CQ/Roll Call, a Capitol Hill publication, in December.

Assuming Strickland’s still strong in Ohio, I’d love to see him in the Senate for a term or two; Ryan’s a good guy, but he’s young enough to be able to wait a bit.
@cincypix: Just googled your guy; liked what I saw, though he’d definitely have time to wait (30!). But glad to see he’s going strong at Portman on having been both Bush’s budget guy and Bush’s trade rep; I’ve never understood how those, er, credentials didn’t kill him the first time.
The big question for me is how Ohio sees Strickland these days. I wouldn’t be as worried about outside money in a presidential year (I expect Dems to spend plenty of time and money there); but if most people see him as old news that could be a problem. Which would be a shame, because
like @jinx_tpm and @PluckyInKY, I think on the merits he’d be terrific. (And he’d clearly be in it for the right reasons: nobody could accuse a 75-year-old of just running out of ambition).
TPM, I know it’s a lot to ask, but could you caption all your photos?
Sherrod Brown prevailed against a well-funded Republican in 2012; it can be done.
Eh, I’d bet on a well known, former governor with statewide appeal being able to nail down the necessary cash to unseat a sitting senator over somebody I had to Google. Also, no matter who we run in 2016 in OH, they’re going to get pummeled with negative ads because OH is such a crucial swing state in the presidential election. I’d rather have our presidential candidate blanketing the state with a known quantity than an unknown.
Also, if Jeb is on the ticket we’'ll have two pinatas to smack – Dubya’s bro and budget guy.
Where’s my stick?
I get that, but I think his experience and temperament make for a really good senator at any age. If we can get that seat back and he serves a term or two … good for us and good for Ohio.
On the other had the ‘across the aisle’ old farts don’t fare as well as our Dems. Grassley, Hatch, Cochran, and Hatch, for example, are waaaay past their sell-by dates.
Great! Where can I contribute?
Oh, as I said, I totally agree with you and Plucky on the merits; but as I also said, I’d love to know what Ohioans think about him these days. I assume Strickland’s folks are polling on that, and that if he actually gets in it means things are looking good for him.
70 and sharp as a tack. Our Governor Brown is 73 and he’s as sharp as anyone and in excellent shape. I have seen him interviewed of late and he looks great and sounds great. He is also well liked in Ohio. I say bring it on
He is very well liked in Ohio. He was a very popular governor
