Discussion: Report: Cyberattack On Dem Groups Much Broader Than First Appeared

Of course, it’s the Drumpf+Putin way.

Julian Assange has been a busy little boy.

Somebody needs to hack the RNC. Pronto!

and “The best defense is a good offense.” --Mel, the cook on Alice.

Seriously? They couldn’t hack into the Repuke’s Governors Association? All those ALEC emails just sitting there, swirling around, on how to coordinate menacing legislation. That would have been a lot more interesting to read. Just think, with Gov. Nerd Snyder, we could’ve at least seen how the fucker planned the Flint Water Crisis and led the eventual cover-up.

Assange really has his priorities ass-backwards if he thinks he’s some kind of “revolutionary”. This guy is an unprincipled asshole. Wouldn’t be surprised if he has links to alt-right groups either. I hope they nail him for his crimes.

So, do you think President Hillary Clinton is going to make cybersecurity a higher priority than it has been?

Mel wasn’t the first one to say that.

Not only would the leaks be juicy, but if someone were looking for personal information of well-off people as targets for future scams, they’d definitely be going after the R side. Which is what makes it clear that these attacks are about interfering in elections rather than just general state-vs-state or random-hacker activity. (Of course, on the other hand, for all we know the R side has been thoroughly hacked and that’s why they’re being so Putin-friendly, rather than see the goat pictures released.)

I’m sure I am missing something obvious, here, but I can’t figure out what might be in these emails or databases that would have any affect on the election. Certainly, there are no state secrets that should have been sent through the (embarassingly porous) State Department secure system. There are certainly no emails from Bill or Hillary. So, what would be in these systems that would be of any interest to anyone who is not a big time donor whose tender sensibilities might be be bruised by seeing an email that spoke in unflattering terms about the amount of his contributions, and how the DNC wanted to get more money out of him. But, as I say, I know there must be horrible, game changing info in there somewhere. I am hoping that there are some TPM commenters who can tell me what they are.

As reported by TPM: “Former DNC chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (R-FL) stepped down last month after WikiLeaks released internal emails that showed party officials mocking the campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).”

How can the fomer chair of the DNC, a Republican representive of Floridia according to TPM, be the chairman of this party? If so, does this explain the hacking as an inside job?

That’s certainly the fear. But I have a gut sense, based on nothing in particular, that anything “damaging” in those emails will consist primarily of “inside baseball.” In other words, it will all be discussions of underhanded campaign tactics, murky links between donors and party officials, and so on. That’s the kind of stuff that political junkies salivate over, but that most voters don’t even understand.

Unless there’s an email in there from some well-known party official to a hit man, telling him to “take out this guy,” or an email that confirms that Clinton is a shape-shifting alien from Zeta Ophiuchi, there won’t be much that has any effect.

I, for one, welcome our shape-shifting Overlords from Zeta Ophiuchi. And from Zeta Reticuli as well.

These are Putin’s priorities, not Assange’s. Assange is just the marionette.

There are almost certainly emails describing Bernie, his campaign staff and his followers in uncomplimentary terms and, quite likely some that will be portrayed as evidence of a big conspiracy by Democratic Party insiders to thwart Bernie’s campaign. I’d say that’s their primary objective and what they were hunting for–but I’m not sure the people doing this have either a good enough sense of how American politics work to do the timing right or that they understand Americans well enough to judge what will stick.

I have certainly been amazed, over the years, by how little understanding of our politics even the British journalists have. They seem to feel that they have this great feel for their American cousins, but, not surprisingly, can’t help imputing their own perceptions and experiences onto us, just as we often do with them. And if the Brits don’t get us, the Russians truly never have.

Gee, I wonder what Karl Rove has been up to lately?

Well, even if the Russians hacked the RNC too, they’ll never release anything that would hurt the Republican party. After all, Trump is their boy.

Certainly Putin’s and Assange’s interests are aligned. Who’s paying his expenses as he languishes in the Ecuadorian embassy? In addition, Assange has his own reasons for harming Hillary; she advocated his extradition and prosecution for espionage.
