For a public figure (like Hillary) to successfully sue a media outlet, the standard is âactual maliceâ, which includes publishing/broadcasting something that is âknowingly falseâ. By informing the broadcasters through the cease-and-desist letters that the material is âprovably falseâ the campaign is establishing âactual maliceâ. I imagine there are emergency meetings of the broadcastersâ attorneys as we speak.

I think at least one wing of the democratic/progressive coalition should try a pitying approach. Not âThatâs a lie, buster, put up your dukes!â but rather âWhy does it make you feel good to believe all those lies? How can we help you not be crazy?â Because trolling and outrage are what make so many wingnuts feel good. If they think theyâre being piitied, it will get under their skin and weaken them.
Of course, this should be in concert with some quiet but effective stomping and ref-working.
