Discussion for article #241775
What he should really push for is an elimination of the notion of a “debt ceiling” entirely. Repeal the damned thing.
These G.O.P. politicians are always pushing the idea that the Government’s budget is somehow like your own household budget (though is most certainly is not). You know the drill - deficit spending is bad, debt is bad, and so on. And yet none of us has the option of incurring expenses, but then refusing to pay for them because we have too much debt. “I’m sorry, Capital One, but I can’t make any further payments on my credit card bill, because I’ve exceeded my debt limit.”
You bought it, you pay for it.
And come Halloween, if there is no Speaker, Congress closes it’s doors?
Because without a Speaker they can’t legally operate, which means they can’t elect a Speaker?
You know, there was a time when it was possible to imagine a situation where, in the fact of a deadlock between hardliners and non-hardliners within the majority party during an election for Speaker, a candidate came forward to break the deadlock by winning with votes from the other party and, thereafter running the House on a bipartisan basis. You know, a few committee or subcommittee chairs handed to the other party, bills given rules by the Rules Committee that can only win with votes from both parties, that kind of thing.
But let us be honest. Even in the days when it was possible to imagine such a thing, it is impossible to imagine such a thing happening if it made a Democrat the Speaker. Democrats might vote to put a less awful Republican in charge, but no Republican, at least since the end of the Progressive Era, would ever, ever, ever, ever in a million years vote to put a Democrat in charge. Ever.
Could it be that Boehner has joined the No Fucks Left to Give Club at the personal invitation of Barack HUSSEIN! Obama?
Newt!
Boehner to Teatrolls: “Yeah, thanks for making my Speakership so ‘special.’ Oh, and, ummmm, that bag of dicks you ordered arrived today…”
If before resigning Boehner could also get the Republicans to admit their opposition to Obamacare was all horseshit and the Benghazi committee was pure theater, that would be great.
That’s what I’ve been saying since he announced he was stepping down. Some said it was naive to think so. It just makes since. Why else would he step down unless he was actually planning to get some of the country’s business off the table beforehand?
The Treasury Department has said that the federal government is expected to exceed its current borrowing limit on Nov. 5
True to form Boehner will raise the debt limit at midnight on November 5th.
How far will he kick the can down the road?
Indeed. Or even more to the point in terms of their constant promises of tax cuts: “I’m sorry, Capital One, I’m not going to be able to pay you any more because I voluntarily fucked my revenue stream down to nothing.”
I heard someone on the teevee the other day actually throw Dick Cheney’s name into the game.
Fine. Now Tierney…‘has been encouraged by Democrats and some moderate Republicans alike’…there are NO ‘moderate’ Republicans. There are some ‘less crazy’ Republicans of ‘less dogmatic’ Republicans but they are ALL extremely conservative or too scared to stand up to the nutjobs for fear of primaried by them. The notion of a ‘moderate Republican’ has been disputed for a least a decade.
I think last night’s debate-- and the next 5 --will contrast nicely to this kind of GOP gaming bullshit. It’s cool to have a public narrative of sanity and civility and patriotism running parallel to the GOP’s hair-on-fire terrorism.
Bill Clinton. He’d get along with the next President.
Cheney was their second choice after someone told them that Keyser Söze isn’t a real person.
…My boss wants to give me a raise, but I told him “hell no, no new income”. It’s not fair to the CEO and board members of my company to take money away from those millionaires and billionaires just to raise income levels for workers like me.
Perhaps that is why Pelosi told House GOPs that they are on their own. House Dems win this one no matter what GOPs do. If House GOPs choose someone acceptable to Dems, they’ll work with him/her. If House GOPs pick one from the Crazy Caucus,House Dems can sit back and watch them self-destruct.
