Discussion for article #230441
I can understand about oil drilling equipment (we all need at least a three mile buffer from an oil rig). But there is little reason to believe that a flightless bird like the sage grouse would be affected by a wind turbine 60’ to 100’ overhead.
The concern would be the installation infrastructure of the wind turbine and maintenance road access. Wind turbines don’t appear magically in place.
They aren’t flightless. And in addition to what jmj said, tall structures provide perches for hawks and eagles which are predators.
This is further proof that electricity production needs to be decentralized.
It is much cheaper for consumers to put solar panels and small windmills onto rooftops than it is to needlessly take up open land for electric utility energy projects, even if they are alternative energy projects.
Electric and gas utilities will meet the same fate as the fossil fuel industries within the next 50 years, which is bankruptcy and liquidation.
Given the complexity of plant and animal interactions no species should ever be allowed to go extinct because of human interference. Humans came along fairly late in the evolution scheme and found a bountiful planet to provide excess nourishment to allow civilizations to develop, prosper, and collapse in ruins. Maintaining the biodiversity of Earth is essential to maintain the species of homo sapiens.
