Hold her until she either agrees to her job or she resigns.

what recourse do the three have if Davis gets out and takes retribution?

Excellent. I hope to see photographs of the happy beaming faces of that poor couple who were so humiliated and traumatized on Monday this afternoon.

And she will, I’m sure. Recall that her own son works in that office, and her mother ran the office for the 37 years prior to Kim Davis taking over a few months ago, so the behind-the-scenes office politics there was probably pretty nasty before this. And when she does start making life more miserable for her staff than it was already, we’re back to the same problem that she is an elected official who cannot be easily fired or disciplined by the state or county.

“but he will not be held in contempt”

Why the fuck not?

This was not a “librul judge”. David Bunning is a staunch Republican. He was appointed by G.W. Bush. He is the son of former Kentucky Senator Jim Brunning.

Judge David Bunning is the son of Jim Bunning, a former U.S. Senator from Kentucky who is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Jim Bunning, who won 224 games while pitching in the major leagues from 1955 to 1971, served as a Republican senator from 1999 to 2011. The elder Bunning also served as the U.S. Representative for Kentucky’s 4th district from 1987 to 1999.

I’m sure a hostile work environment lawsuit will be following shortly.

Why shouldn’t he be held in contempt as well? (I know the answer, it’s because there will be other personnel available to issue the licenses.) But still, make it a family affair.

Because he hasn’t been as willfully non-compliant as she has. This was his first chance to follow the law or not. If he keeps on doing it, I’m sure he’ll get a contempt of court against him as well.

I imagine because there are other employees who can perform the service for the public… but I’m with you, toss him in jail and throw away the key. I bet he thinks that will be HIS job once his mother retires.

Are there no laws against nepotism in Kentucky?

WOWK also reported that the judge who sent Davis into custody won’t release her even if the deputies start granting licenses to gay couples.

Okay, this addresses the question I had. She will be forced to acquiesce (and backtrack on all of her absolutist rhetoric) or resign. The latter is preferable, if she truly believes she is unable to do what is required due to her faith.

I’m sure we will hear the reasoning of the judge as details emerge, but suspect it may be that the son was not specifically cited by the judge prior to this, and is now giving him a chance to think it over(???)

Mother supervising son = inappropriate!

Which is why I don’t understand why the one deputy clerk (her son) who is refusing as well isn’t also in the clink now with her.

But if the other deputies are issuing the license, he won’t be confronted with the issue and so skates while saying he would not comply.

I hope she gets the help she needs. To be full of rage and hate all the time has to make her life as horrible as she imagines the gay folks lives to be.
