Discussion: Rep. Keith Ellison Formally Announces Candidacy For DNC Chair

How long before a sitting member of Congress actually questions if it’s legal for a Muslim to head a major U.S. political party? Louie Gohmert anyone?

Good. And nice to hear of Warren’s support as well.

Let’s get to work!

Oh Fuck!
Now anyone who opposes him (like me) will get labeled a “RACIST!” by the “coasties” and Bernie-Bots.
He will easily win the job, and completely FAIL at it because he has NEVER run anything more complicated than a single inner-city congressional district campaign that was 100% minority-focused.
He may speak the words, but he can’t back them up (“All Hat, No Steer”)
The MSM will have a field day with this one too, “Democrats elect DNC Chair from District with the most Terrorist Recruits in the Country!” (which is actually true, out of context, like everything else the MSM does.)
I am FROM Minnesota and know of Ellison well. He is in Waaaaaayyyyy over his head here.
There go the 2018 elections (he will make DWS look good by comparison)
After that is done there will be a 60+ Republican Majority in the Senate (no more filibuster issues) and a 200 seat majority in the House. Say hello to 2 more Justice Scalia’s on the SCOTUS and no more “right” to vote.
fuck
Maybe I should move to Canada.

You got it. Head of DNC is primarily a fundraising gig not a policy creation gig. Seems to me that this can pull in the $27 monthly crowd and I guess that’s good because they feel like they’re doing something. But it’s not really a strong plan for creating a Dem majority in Congress. That is, if that’s what you think needs to be done…

EDIT TO ADD: While I have no doubts that the berniacs think that getting “big money” or “dark money” out of politics is great, not being able to raise large sums of money puts us behind the 8 ball in terms of recruiting good Dems nationwide. However, if you’re just interested in masturbating about “New Deal Dems” well then…

Nah. Steve King (R-Shitkickers in Iowa)

Tom Cotton would be cautiously accepting of it, so long as the DNC vetting process involved waterboarding.

The GOP defends eight Senate seats in 2018. Dems defend twenty-five. What politician alive could navigate the midterms and deliver a Senate majority to Democrats, or even maintain the current margin?

It just gets better for Democrats. I bet this guy is going to speak to the voters in the 209 counties that voted for Obama TWICE that voted for Trump in 2016.

You never can be certain. 2016 was suppose to be a very good year for Democrats and it was a disaster. However, I would give the GOP a better than 50% to pick up a few seats, since four of the states voted by a massive margin for Trump.

This is a scurrilous right wing piece. Nonetheless we need to know if the record of his financial dealings is correct or not. The rest is mostly hysterical right wing tripe.

As a local do you know if he failed to pay his taxes in time and why he got in trouble over campaign regulations?

This is going to be interesting. Having guys like Warren behind him is good, but hopefully this doesn’t result in infighting in the party. Furthermore I still was Dean on in some capacity due to the 50 state strategy

I don’t think Ellison will be a good pick.
We need someone that can devote a lot of time to this job. Plus I don’t find him to be particularly persuasive - at least not in the interviews I have seen him do

Yeah that just lets the Reps brand the Dems as the Mooslem Party(sic)

Way to play into the fears so recently stoked by the incoming CiC.

He needs to quit in order to run the DNC. We can’t afford any more part time chairs since the party is in really bad shape right now.

I lke Ellison, but a far-left black Muslim is not going to make the party look welcoming to the white working class we need to attract.

And being DNC chair shouldn’t be a part-time job. We’ve seen how that turns out.

It’s more than a fund-raising position—or at least it should be. We need a good 50-state party-building strategy, which will take a hell of a lot of money and organizing and that can’t be done by someone with a full-time job in the House.

And how can Ellison run for re-election and still get the job done of taking over the Senate in 2018.

By my count, (admittedly rough), Dems will be defending 24 seats in 2018. Now, some of those will be in reliably Blue states but, as you say, one of those seats is HIS.

Now, someone tell me - how does he:

1.) do fundraising for the Democratic Party,
2.) try to craft some sort of policies for Dems going forward with a goal of picking up more seats and
3.) defend his own seat

at the same time?

EDIT TO ADD: Also keeping in mind that he’s from a reliably Blue state himself. How are Rust Belt Dems going to react to him?

FDR? No one like that coming down the pipe any time soon.
Great personal wealth is a non-starter with the party-purists and no one seems to want to risk their “legacy” in politics anymore.
There are no more Lincoln’s, Obama’s, or even Truman’s on the horizon for the Democrats, more or less any FDRs or even Teddy Roosevelts (and remember he LOST during his 3rd party run.)

It warms the heart to see all the same anti-Bernies in here also attacking this man, who Sanders and Warren have strongly endorsed. Didn’t you guys learn anything last Tuesday? The DNC was corrupt to the core - is currently leaderless due to that fact after BOTH chairs resigned in disgrace - and it’s time make a clean break and get on track with the sorts of politics that would have taken Trump down with a 15pt lead.
