What happened? That’s easy. We elected, and then reelected, a black man for president. Outreach is always good if you keep them “out of reach.” But when we actually elected a monitory as CinC? That was just a bridge too far.

A little bit more background–During W’s first term, it was common for Conservatives to say that they agreed with him on everything except immigration, because it was the one issue where W was a true moderate. When W’s popularity went down and the economy imploded, most Americans blamed W generally because he was a horrible president who was always wrong about everything. Conservatives, however, blamed it all on W’s immigration policy because they agreed with W on everything else. They also blamed Reid, Pelosi, and Frank for the economy, but the specific issue of W’s and the Republicans’ unpopularity in 2008 was blamed on W’s immigration policy.

The problem with Bush’s strategy is that the majority of Republicans are bigots. That’s why Bush’s push for immigration reform failed. The Sensenbrenner Immigration bill is what truly reflects the GOP bigots’ need for punishment of all they do not like.
Trump fed the bigots Yooge slabs of Red Meat. Consequently he is the leading Republican candidate. But he will get fewer Latino votes than there are undocumented immigrants working at Trump hotels.

Funny that in the entire article the perfesser simply doesn’t mention racism…
Conservatives also blamed GOP losses in 2006 on Iraq too. They thought,and still do, that their blocking of Comprehensive Immigration Reform had nothing to do with it.

This should be added to the Common Core Curriculum, along with George Washington, Abe Lincoln and 6 times 7 equals 42.
I don’t think we really need to wait a few months. Even if Trump loses, he has set the terms that the candidate must meet in order to prevail. Latino inclusion is not one of them (and that’s putting it nicely).

One thought that occured to me with Trump’s talk of building a wall is, won’t we also have to build some kind wall or barrier in the Gulf of Mexico and probably around the lower portions of Fl and CA?
Planning ahead is not their strong suit.

I know, voting for the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts, creating the EPA and OSHA. Having some sane ideas for a national health plan. The Interstate Highway System. Where did those folks go?

Even Bush the Dummer’s plan was just a sucker deal. He wasn’t authentic in the slightest but he was wise to what it took to win.
What Republicans truly want is to hold Mexicans down and to use and abuse them and definitely not to let them vote. They struggle with this because they don’t really want to be helpful and do anything meaningful. That shit that spews from their pieholes is all a disingenuous con game.
The GOP, the Repub Party, the base and their leading candidate all despise immigrants and especially immigrants of color.
Although, they do have token blacks and browns around that spout the craze of the right-wing but at least they don’t glow in the dark.
VICTORIA DEFRANCESCO SOTO: In my family we are musing on the possibility that Trump is crazy like a fox. That is, he cuts loose the Latino/Hispanic vote because the base hates immigration. Next, he will pivot to lure in Black (old-fashioned, cultural) Conservatives, With them, Trump will try to stir up fears of jobs competition. Base will love it as it will “prove” GOP isn’t bigoted because they “care” about Blacks. Thoughts? I think this strategy may have been tried before, but can’t recall.
