Yes, but have they ever had people boycott their games before? Senator Reid has said he will not go to their games until they change their name. The owners of the Redskins have the right to keep their name, but people have the right to boycott their games because of the name too. I am not sure how many people will do that, but I would suppose Senator Reid is a good start.
But in 10 years beliefs, attitudes, and interpretations can change especially on issues of discrimination and bigotry. Look what has happened in attitudes toward gay marriage. It has gone very quickly from icky to equal rights.
“And just like last time, today’s ruling will have no effect at all on the team’s ownership of and right to use the Redskins name and logo.”
Exactly. Nor will it impede anyone else from putting it on items and selling them far more cheaply than the crap you and the NFL sold with exclusive rights until now.
You can delay the inevitable based on appeal, but you’d best be holding a “name the team” contest among your fan base real quick-like, that is, unless you care more about preserving your bigotry than about preserving those revenues. And since this is about business more than stupid pride, I suspect you’ll see the light soon enough.
I wouldn’t expect they have enough fans that’ll boycott their games to make a difference. However, the nation as a whole can choose to boycott their advertisers and financial supporters.
Would somebody explain just why the Redskins owners are so smitten with the name? I don’t think keeping the Native American equivalent of the “N” word as your name is worth the trouble.
I don’t know why Snyder chooses this particular hill to die on. It’s not really a battle worth fighting. And even then, in a worst-case scenario he would have to manufacture a bunch of new merchandise with a new logo that people would buy, and make a bunch of money. Or maybe they don’t even have to change the colors and logo if they don’t want to… just the name. The “Warriors” or something.
Really, the NFL could easily croak this. Simply don’t schedule them for any games until they change the name.
All it takes is guts.
They televise the games on national tv, you would have to boycott every company that advertises on all the games. I don’t see that working.
Native Americans, start a semi pro team called the New York K!kes. Create a team logo based on unpleasant Jewish stereotypes. Make t-shirts and hats with the team logo and name and start selling them. Watch the hew and cry, then simply say it’s is no more offensive than the Washington Redskins.
former one-term senator george “macaca” allen is advising dan “the devil” snider on racial sensitivity. isn’t it ironic. like a black fly in your chardonnay.
I really don’t understand why they’re putting up such a fight from the business standpoint. It seems like if they came up with a new name and logo before alienating everyone it would create a new revenue stream.
I wouldn’t be surprised if NFL lawyers go after those who commercialize the logo, however. And the NFL has deep (tax-exempt) pockets to outlast most defendants in the courts.
and as they said on the bridge of the Titanic…
“ah …seen one iceberg, seen 'em all…”
Because if he knuckles under without a last-ditch fight, the right wing outrage will be far more damaging to his bottom line than any amount of left wing outrage. Thing Limbaugh fatwas and Billo crying “pinheads!” and the Morning Fox people squealing like stuck pigs, Hate Radio calling for boycotts and probably that loon at the Family Research Council saying Jesus weeps for the loss of a racial epithet and declares the new name part of the homosexual agenda.
Commissioner Goodell is not Commissioner Silver; nor does this issue resonate among NFL owners and players like Sterling’s personalized tirade and tawdry history did in his league.
Trying to rationalize this slur is so dickish that the team should be called the Washington Foreskins.
I guess their not concerned about their trademarks, I mean who would want to copy their racist brand identity?
Redskin games are sold out, like most NFL franchises, something like 30 years in advance. Its not unheard of for season tickets to be put in wills. Being boycotted is not even remotely a worry for the team.
