“The team was invited to the White House on Thursday to celebrate the 2018 World Series champions.”

Does going to meet Trump count as celebration?

Good on ya, Alex!

Will Spankee be providing a spread of Fenway franks for the guests?

I’m sure twitler and his minions will say Cora should go back to his own country.

Of course Trump will opine about the Ungrateful Porta Ricans who got “all our foreign aid.”

Lifelong Yankee fan here…born in the Bronx… but Cora gets big props here and is a class act.

I understand why Cora wouldn’t attend the WH ceremony, what I don’t understand is why anybody else would.

If you show it means you support trump’s racist presidency.

Sounds like it should be used for the worst team instead. “Do well or you’ll have to visit Trump!”

Cora waited until almost the day of the trip to announce his decision. After reading it here, I moseyed on over to the leading newspaper in PR, El Nuevo Dia. The paper was founded in the mid 60’s by the Ferre family. Luis Ferre was an engineer and majority shareholder of Cemento Ponce which was a very profitable company during the post WW2 construction boom. He was also the founder of the modern iteration of the Statehood Party, the Partido Nuevo Progresista or PNP. He was also a one term governor from 1965-69. The paper was founded by a family member, possibly a brother or nephew. The paper is centrist now, but began as sort of a feel good, pro Statehood and Right Leaning paper. Anyway, the comments on the article about Cora’s decision, are not as supportive as I thought. Proportionately, lots of Right Wing and pro-Trump comments, and how ungrateful PRs are etc. The comments section in the paper tends to be very contentious and this is no exception. I provide the link for @emiliano4, @drcoyote, @tiowally,@cervantes possible interest, and anyone else who is interested. If paywall blocks the link you can go to endi.com and search for Alex Cora.

You guys beat me to it.

How come his teammates won’t stay away out of solidarity? Certainly isn’t because of the gourmet meal that will be served…

Used to be standard procedure for all major sports champions. The Golden State Warriors (I think, it could have been someone else) were the first to say, “we are not going” because of Trump being the President. Now it is sort of an ad hoc champion by champion decision, and a lot of the teams that do go, do not go at full strength, since a good number of players choose not to go. The Houston Astros went, all the players, but if you find pictures and video of their visit, check out Jose Altuve’s face the whole time.

Can’t wait to hear from Red Sox Nation

This is what every single patriotic American should do when invited to the White House. Do not give Trump any more photo ops. He uses them to legitimize himself as he strives to destroy the republic.

He’s not the only refusenik. From the article linked by @jacksonhts:

Cora will not be the only member of the Red Sox to be absent from the meeting with Trump. Players David Price, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Rafael Devers, Hector VelĂĄzquez and Puerto Rican catcher Christian VĂĄzquez had already announced that they would not go to the White House.

He’s probably gonna try to pawn some Nathan’s dogs off on them…
And good on Alex for this. He’s always been a class act. Good way to draw attention back to this issue and bring it to an audience (sports fans) that may have low awareness.

But all the white dudes are going to show I guess?
