Discussion: Record Low Percentage Of ICE Arrestees Actually Have Criminal Records

C’mon…simple math here. If ICE changes from targeting “criminals” to just scooping up everyone, it is absolutely logical that the percentage of criminals would go down.

Perhaps the “story” should have been that the number or percentage of ICE arrests of undocumented aliens WITHOUT a criminal record have gone up…but then again, is this NEWS to anyone that has been paying attention???

Speaking of immigrant child separation policy,

That’s nice.

Sessions, who was not confirmed as District Judge in 1986 due to his racists views, who fawned over Trump and lied under oath about not meeting with Russians, who signed an order adopting civil asset forfeiture to seize the property of those not charged with crimes, a major advocate of prosecuting of even medical marijuana growers, rescinded gender discrimination of Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, an opponent of legal immigration from non-white countries, opposed legislation against torture…

Yeah. That guy.

ICE is not there to arrest illegals with criminal records. They are there to arrest and deport illegal aliens. If you’re illegal, you should be arrested and deported.

But they’re not white, so not having a criminal record really doesn’t matter here.

Out of all government agencies, I want this one utterly destroyed. It is the living example of everything ugly about Republican-run government.

And it will never happen.

I’m fine with that.

So long as we arrest and imprison all the business owners who hire said illegals.

If there were no jobs to get here, there wouldn’t be illegal immigration.

Maybe start with a few golf courses with a history of hiring illegals…

More picking produce and less texting on the job, hunny. Unless of course, you’re not doing that and the illegals are.

Donald Trump is keeping the druggies and rapists away. Good time to make a run to American.

Thank God we have a Republican leader strong enough to tear these families limb-from-limb.

History will categorize Trump’s ICE actions as “Purges”. There is no level of hell low enough for Trump. Even Dante would be shaking his head.

Look who crawled out from under his rock. It’s spring, and he didn’t see his shadow. If he had, he would have turned tail and gone back into the darkness under the rock. Now he’ll just blather.

ICE is there to use its scarce resources wisely. Arresting people with no criminal record is not a good use of those scarce resources. Every one of those they bring in is attention and time taken away from those who really are a threat. I’m sorry that this bit of common sense continues to elude you.

And this is different how, exactly?

“That means a staggering 36.5% of ICE arrests had committed no crimes on record.”

Staggering?? Between workplace raids, random checks on the street and such I would have expected it to be higher. This sort of liberal innocence about the world comes across as fake - or just ignorant.

I have been saying that for years.

So does re-crossing the border get you a criminal record? Or any kind of arrest? It would be fascinating to see a breakdown of just what those alleged crimes were.

I totally agree with your second point, and changed the article to reflect that.

Re: “is this NEWS?” I think it absolutely is. Whether or not it’s new or unexpected for people following the story, tracking this number illustrates Trump’s immigration priorities, and can be used if (/when) he attempts to lie about targeting “criminal illegal” undocumented people for deportation rather than his actual policy: essentially, breaking up families at random.

Yes, crossing the border illegally is a crime, a misdemeanor at first and a felony if you’re caught twice. The prosecution of this crime is what formed the legal foundation of the family separation policy.

However, one doesn’t have to commit a crime to be an undocumented person. Most newly undocumented people in America in recent years hadn’t committed crime. BBC:

The number of people who overstayed their visas (tourist or other temporary permits) has exceeded those entering the US illegally every year since 2007, the Center for Migration Studies, a think-tank, said last year, based on data from 2014.

(n.b.: even people who cross the border illegally are entitled to claim asylum.)
