Discussion: Record-Breaking Hurricane Irma, A Category 5, Bears Down On Caribbean

Irma is so strong because of the unusually warm waters for that part of the Atlantic.

Nothing to do with climate change. Clearly, this is god’s will.

I can’t help but wonder - how often will the “once in a century” weather events have to occur within a span of a few years before the credulons get the message? Hurricanes Harvey and Irma are precisely what the climate scientists have been warning about.

They will never get the message, because their eyes and ears are permanently shut, though their tongues never stop flapping.

Exactly. They will never get the message. Their belief system is structured like a religion - it’s impervious to logic. They must be out-lived.

I’m 10 mi from beach on NC coast. Up to Cat2, I hunker down. Then afterwards, break out the shingles, crank up the generator and chain saw. Cat3? I’m off to the hills with all needed gear and memorabilia. Just aint worth the tribulation to hang around.

Their religion is money, and as long as they can make a buck off the fossil fuel economy, they will.

The only way to change their mind is to sue them for every god-d@mn penny they own and make it economically infeasible for them to continue. And we need to hit the banks funding them too.

I never minded it when it was some wackos i never saw, who thought we hadn’t landed on the moon. But really, this is just uncouth.

People have got to start to understand that this is yet another problem caused or exacerbated by Republican ideology. I spend most of my time in the New York Metro area some folks understand that the recent “summer of hell” New Jersey Transit problems were almost a direct cause of Chris Christie sticking his thumb in Obama’s eye because it was the most obvious shovel ready project to expand Penn Station and the Hudson tunnels. Some don’t. These storms: The Koch’s, Exxon, you get the drift.

The absolute worse case scenario … as in donna from 1960 …

is for it to landfall on the southern tip and work it’s way north thru the whole state …

No way to escape … we’ll see what tune the deniers sing then —

Dog…they’re such assholes –

I went to High School in Pompano Beach, near Ft. Lauderdale. The whole place is like, 6 inches above sea level. If it tracked north like that it would be a Nuke without the radiation.

I dunno, outliving them may not be a realistic plan at this point. Just today, a neighbor (quite a bit younger than me) informed me that this is all part of “natural earth cycles” and nothing any of us can do about it. (I’m early 60s…)

A NHC hurricane hunter reading an hour or so ago pegged some low-level winds at 226 MPH. That would be a cat 6 if it existed (using the same scale).

For context, the EF-5 tornado that flattened Joplin, Mo., had 200 MPH winds and was one mile wide. We are seeing a hurricane with 225+ MPH winds that has hurricane winds 60+ miles wide.

Comrade Cockholster claimed (and received) $17 million on about $5,000 in damage the last time Scam-a-Lotto was hit by a storm. I wonder how much he’ll defraud his insurer for this time? Grifters gotta grift.

Don’t you just love it when these disasters are preceded by a comment like “god help us all”? You mean the god that sent the hurricane in the first place? You mean the god that clearly sits by idly while massive forces (of god’s making, of course) destroy lives and property? Just like the time horrible tornadoes ripped through Missouri years ago. An infant was found alive in a field and was immediately dubbed “The Miracle Baby”; it died a day or two later. Yes, The Miracle Baby that was clearly saved by god’s own hand, died a day later. You never hear about that part. People, stop invoking the name of any superstitious, man-made entity when trying to make sense of things you don’t like. The invisible man in the sky isn’t there, folks. The way to help prevent these super storms is to take climate change very seriously; praying ain’t gonna do squat.

Limbaugh lives in Florida. Wouldn’t it be satisfying if Mother Nature and Irma, that liberal hoax, destroyed his home?

There must be something to this. I live in Atlantic Beach Florida and folks are in near panic… Although Irma’s not likely to hit here she’s so damn big and so damn powerful her squalls are sure to be cat 3 in severity. Publix was sold out of bottled water and that damn storm is near a week away. I hope this bitch bounces and dies in the mid Atlantic. I don’t want here and I sure as hell don’t want Huston, NOLA, Cuba or PR to have to deal with her either.

No. It would not. You are talking about a big bitch Cat 5 storm making landfall on South Florida. This storm is a monster mother fucker and it’s sure to kill a lot of people. Fuck off with the jokes.
