Hamas is responsible.

It is also serving to keep our attention from the news of Israel’s ground assault on Gaza.

According to AP, separatists grabbed the Black Box and sent it to Russia for “analysis.”

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

It’ll be a miracle if this thing gets properly investigated on the ground. But satellite photos should help show what really happened, or at least you can hope so.

Strelkov is going to have to prove that it was not his organization that shot down the airliner now.

His social media mouth has overloaded his rectal orifice.

While Ukraine rebellion and Israeli/Hamas war are serious, they are but distractions from the larger Sunni/Shia war going on in the Middle East. We don’t get nearly enough reporting on the latter.

Hmmm, not sure if I buy the “fake group” excuse.

For fucks sake, I wish people would stop pop-farting out these lame “xxxx is to distract from yyyy” comments and memes.

“We don’t have these weapons”, it was shot down by a Ukraine fighter jet, which, um, we were able to shoot down with those weapons we don’t have. A small, nimble fighter taking evasive action while popping off chaff and flares? Sure, we got that. A straight-flying jumbo jet? There’s no way we coulda hit that.

That is quite the tell isn’t it?

The Kyiv Post reports that Ukraine’s main security agency, the SBU, has released recordings of intercepted phone calls between separatists and Russian military intelligence officers, in which the militants admit to shooting down the civilian plane.

“It’s 100 percent a passenger (civilian) aircraft,” a militant identified as “Major” says, noting that there are no weapons on the site. “Absolutely nothing. Civilian items, medicinal stuff, towels, toilet paper.” He describes the group who shot down the plane as “Cossacks.”

The SBU also released a call between Igor Bezler, a separatist leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic and an alleged Russian military intelligence officer, and Vasili Geranin, identified as an intelligence colonel in the headquarters of the Russian army. “We have just shot down a plane,” Bezler says.

The militants on the call appear surprised that they had shot down a civilian plane. The militant identified as “Greek” inquires into what type of plane was shot down and about the passengers onboard. The other militant, “Major” says that, “it’s totally f****d. The pieces are falling right into yards”. Upon finding out that the flight was “100 percent” a civilian aircraft, “Greek” continues to ask questions until it is revealed that one of the passengers was an Indonesian student. If these rebels are indeed responsible for shooting down the airliner, it does not appear that they were aware that they were targeting a civilian aircraft when they fired.

Hats off to TPM for the restrained coverage – while the rest of the
media goes freakin’ nuts with: “BREAKING! No new information!!!”

$50 per year well spent.

Your comment is clearly intended to distract from Nobama’s abysmal approval rating.

Igor Gorkin might be claiming someone else made the post, but “someone else” or “fans of Gorkin” could still very well be someone in camp with him or with knowledge of that camp’s goings-on. It’s a sentence and it seems to obscure Gorkin directly, but it isn’t an excuse that would explain away involvement in the shooting.

Also, if the shot was fired from the ground, that doesn’t sound like one of the major militaries in the region. Putin’s Russia isn’t going to shoot down a civilian flight out of Paris and certainly not from a hilltop. Doubly so Poroshenko; triply so any NATO country. Surface to air doesn’t mean it wasn’t military, but it certainly doesn’t sound like the action of a state actor.

And as to taking credit? 295 people unrelated to your conflict is a pretty severe toll to take credit for.

The content of the post is also confusing, based on the known facts, as Vox noted. Strelkov’s alleged post appeared to refer to a military transport plane being shot down, one that would have been about 150 feet shorter than the Malayasian Air Boeing 777. Foreign Policy also observed that the post appears to take credit for downing a different plane.

Actually, no. That’s not “confusing.” That’s perfectly consistent with them mistaking an airliner for another transport and high-riving themselves about it until they realize they were wrong.

At least five airliners have been shot down over the years by military people (including ours) who were expecting to see enemy aircraft and thus beat the data from their radar into the shape they were expecting.

June 29, /ITAR-TASS/. Self-defence forces of the Donetsk People’s Republic have taken control over a missile defence army unit equipped with Buk missile defence systems, the press service of the Donetsk People’s Republic told Itar-Tass on Sunday.

I don’t think the average rebel faction has access to this type of missile platform.

It’s like they need to start lacing the water supply with Ritalin, or something.
