This isn’t a top of the page/big headline story. Really TPM? Is this where you’re going - tabloid news? A lawyer is suing his former law firm. How many times does that happen a day? Most likely plenty. Avenatti is right; who cares.
Very strange story for TPM to be running as if it were real news. It’s the third anti-Avenatti nothingburger to appear on this site this week. He threated to sue a Daily Caller hack for spreading defamatory lies. (Trump is attempting to destroy the very existence of the fourth estate.) He called a reporter an asshole. (Trump just called immigrants "animals.’) And now he’s in a lawsuit in which breach of contract is alleged. (Trump is embroiled in hundreds of lawsuits, some of which involve allegations of fraud and total failure to pay for services rendered.)
All of this on one of the biggest news day in months. It would seem that TPM is not immune from journalistic envy, because there’s no other explanation for its participation in what is clearly a series of trivial attacks designed to knock down a new anti-Trump media superstar who (horror of horrors) has run-of-the-mill biographical imperfections. And yet here we all are, having to add ‘speak up for Avenatti’ to our to-do lists.
Talking point memo to TPM: cut this out. Do a round-up at the end of the week with the headline ‘Avenatti subject to a series of awfully small criticisms by desperate Trumpist press.’ Otherwise cut it out.
I’m interested in why TPM believes this particular story deserves front and center (and huge headline font) attention.
I look forward to your explanation.
The only thing I find strange is the timing. It takes time to prepare a pleading. You would usually issue a demand. There would be a few back and forth discussions. Then sometime no earlier than June a suit would be filed.
Point of clarification: While it may well be news that BigFoot is currently humping the Loch Ness Monster, or has humped the same within a time period to which the Statute of Limitations applies, that does not mean that anyone else, including you, TPM reader, has done anything illegal or even necessarily morally wrong in your, or her or his, own individual personal humping(s) of the Loch Ness monster.
Should you or someone you know be humping the Locm Ness monster currently or have done so in the recent past, and you or that someone important to you is now concerned that your, she or he may be exposed to the same sort of legal jeopardy or moral condemnation as Big Foot, we recommend that you consult a licensed and fully bonded attorney of your choosing ASAP.
Between the unstable platform that comes to a halt on a big story, ‘forgetting’ to turn comments on with big stories and then junk stories like this, I have really had to think twice about membership.
The only website I have trouble loading on my tablet routinely is this one.
TPM has been running a steady stream of this attack stories about Avenatti for about a week now. So far they have all been “clouds and shadows” bullshit stories. This one is slightly above that, but it’s still pretty far down on the list comparatively.
I agree with many other opinions being expressed here…its been quite disappointing to see TPM running with these stories.
Avenatti isn’t an angel? Big F__ing Deal. I pretty much figured that out the first time I saw him in front of a microphone. He still has uncovered and driven perhaps the most important aspect of the Trump legal problems by bringing down Cohen. And has exposed SOOO much more than any of the vaulted MSM. Including, sadly, TPM.
The both sides brigade has arrived. Like there is an equivalency here. The difference is that the left holds their representatives accountable which has happened time and time again. Which is why you are bringing it up. Just throw some shade Avenatti’s way and we will stop cheering him on.
I looked at this complaint last night when it was posted on TPM. It’s a nothing burger. It’s one cause of action for breach of contract (guarantee). The allegations are 11 pages long, which is typical. The rest is exhibits.
The complaint is filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court in downtown Los Angeles.
Pro Tip: Regarding civil litigation where “Anyone can file a law suit” (or “Allegations are cheap”), the second most common feature of the private American bar is former law partners suing each other. Litigiousness between lawyers? Ain’t a bug, it’s a feature.
