Joyce Vance: Cohen’s cooperation wasn’t immediate. It wasn’t complete. It wasn’t thorough. That’s what prosecutors look for when they do a sentencing memo.
ETA: Bad news for the people who are trying to stall.

Interesting…4-5 years implies that the prosecution thought his crimes were very severe, and the cooperation he has given didn’t offset that by enough to get him off scot free like Flynn. I bet they got so much from his documents/electronic data that they didn’t need much from him except to fill in some blanks. This does explain how he has sometimes seemed desperate to be seen as cooperating…he was a witness but not going to be covered fully for his cooperation, and after Trump threw him under the bus the best he could get is a reduced sentence.
Cohen obviously did some bad things over the years, he deserves to pay for them. The question is how many of the things he did for Trump are going to come forward now, and what their effect is going to be. It will be interesting to read the summaries that will come out soon, there will be nuggets buried in the memo that give an idea of what is coming next from Mueller.
Individual-1 makes his entrance on Page 3. Everyone clap!
I served 60 months in Federal system in my younger years. 13 of it in isolation. 42 is a walk in the park, especially given what he did. But I apparently misread the recommendation in my haste and it is 51-63. Better, but he really should be doing decades.
You can only get a cooperation agreement if the prosecution is willing to offer a cooperation agreement.
Not sure what I expected, but not this. I guess he didn’t give enough dirt on Trump. Or did he and they are keeping it under wraps? Does he have more to offer? Is the SDNY calling bullshit on his “help” thus far?
Hey! Think they’ll hire me?
Ah, I thought the Probation Dept. recommendation was 42 months, my mistake for quickly scanning the report. Thank you for the correction.
And there seems to be plenty of evidence to prove what he did.
Easy to say when you’re not the one looking at doing 4 years inside. hahahaha
No big. Evidently you do have a right to comment on the relative toughness of what he got. Lots of people will say it’s a short term without having any idea what it really means.
Special Counsel’s office has now filed their memo too.
Cohen cooperated, but not on everything and only belatedly. Sounds like he was hoping for a pardon from Individual One, and only decided to cooperate when Donnie publicly turned on him, and then cooperated out of vengeance and self-interest. Like most mob soldiers.
Is 4 years really substantial?
He apparently cooperated much more with the SC than he did with the SDNY.
IIRC, Mueller agreed to a deal that gave “Sammy the Bull” Gravano less time than that – for 19 murders.
Yup. I remember driving home the other night just as the last one of thse came out(was it Flynn? There’s so damned many of them it’s impossible to track them all! ). The talking heads were all over themselves. I think they divided it up by groups of pages, because as somebody found something to mention, they’d call it out in real time - what a circus shiet show it all was. I would suspect something similar is going on right now with this one, but I’m at work and have things to finish if I want at least part of the weekend to myself, so I’m rationing my inputs.
I would say though, that I thought they’d go easier on Cohen, given the signs that he’d been useful to them, and how much higher up the food chain I figured he was, compared to Flynn. Oh well, lie down with flea-infested douchebags, get up to 51 months…
OK this is what I wonder: If he’d given up everything, if he said yeah I went to Prague and gave Russians money to work with Parscale and Cambridge Analytica to coordinate with troll farms and send negative Hillary stories to exactly the districts we needed in WI-MI-PA in return for sanctions etc. etc. etc. in other words if he gave it all up, I wonder if they’d still be calling for this much time. Certainly what Flynn did was just as serious? And yet he skates. Hmm. Much to think about here.
Very glad to see this. About time the prosecutors bared their teeth. Even so, Cohen has gotten off lightly.
He was a career criminal. He didn’t cooperate with SCO or the SDNY, save to the extent that he offered confirmation of details already known to them. He didn’t flip, in other words. He fessed up at the last minute in respect of charges he couldn’t beat at trial. He kept stum about all kinds of other stuff (presumably money-laundering) that could and should have been offered to the prosecutors, no doubt because of family gonnegtions.
In those circumstances, he’s lucky to get 4 years. Other Americans routinely get locked away for much longer, for much more trivial matters. Take him down. Lock him up.
But Gotti got got.
