Discussion: READ: Mueller Argues Manafort, Gates Are Flight Risk In Newly Unsealed Doc

It still boggles my mind that Manafort and Gates aren’t in cells right now.

Donnie could call for a Russian sub to pick them up at any time.

Best Manafort stays home anyway. Europe is lovely and fascinating but the tea isn’t always healthy to drink and the windows are awfully easy to be thrown out of.

U.S. passports with different numbers

How is that legal?

while that idea is vicariously satisfying we still are supposed to be a country of laws…

filing of charges is just that… a filing not proof of guilt…

bail is set to insure that the people show up for trial… it’s not meant to punish… house arrest and electronic monitoring are conditions of the bail process…

while I think we all agree that they might be guilty all that means right now is that we couldn’t serve on the jury…

This is laughable on its face. Do you know how many people in this country have sat in jail cells for weeks or months awaiting trial? Not nearly enough, because a whole hell of a lot of innocent-until-proven-guilty citizens actually sit in jail cells awaiting trial for years.

yes I do… and clearly the current bail system is unjust… lots of discussion are now going on on how to reform the bail system,.

but if you think what I said is laughable then you’re on the road to accepting authoritarianism…

one more time… we are STILL supposed to be country of LAWS… that include the bail system…

Someone charged with conspiracy against the United States, has deep ties with countries hostile to the US, holds three (3) passports (that we know of), and has millions stashed off-shore, is not your ordinary indictee.

Lock him up.

And Putin has shown absolute willingness to have witnesses to his interference in the politics of other countries murdered.

Mueller noted that both have traveled abroad extensively and revealed that Manafort currently has three U.S. passports with different numbers. Manafort has applied for a passport ten times in the last ten years, per the court filing.

Ummm…I don’t get that. How does that even happen? With different numbers on it? Let’s say you claim you lost your passport and need a new one…don’t you get the same number somewhere on file when you’re issued a new passport so it can still track your travels? Wonder if any of those were forged passports. Either that, or someone’s not doing their job. This kind of thing should have been flagged a long time ago. Ten times in ten years…Just too weird.

True. That’s what I was considering: Manafort would probably—maybe at all costs—prefer to take his chances (or lumps) with Mueller than receive a death sentence from Putin.

Wait until we find out Manafort’s real name is Jason Bourne.

This is the saddest example I’m familiar with:

Fairly common for people in development who need a passport while one is at an embassy to have a second. You need a third when visiting India and Pakistan or Israel and Iran/some Arab countries and can’t use a passport with the other’s visa.

For Manafort, though? Seems sketchy.

I don’t know if it’s still true but people also used to be refused entry to a lot of Middle Eastern countries if your passport had an Israeli visa stamp…

There’s also some mention of Gates having opened and closed something like 55 bank accounts in the last few years, some of them in places like Cyprus.

But let’s be fair. How many of us haven’t done exactly the same thing? Why, if not for my password-protected spreadsheet, I wouldn’t be able to tell you where all of my millions are. And let’s not even mention the source of those millions - I earned it all through sheer diligence and hard work.
